If you're not a member now, it's in your economic interest to join now.  (And if you're thinking about giving a gift membership this Christmas, better move fast!)

It's not our fault.  Really.  We'd like to keep prices low, despite the huge benefits of membership -- the conversations, the exchanges between and among our members and contributors, the crackling back and forth with esteemed guests, politicians, conservative activists, and Americans who want to save their country.  Despite the podcasts and the member networking features, the Ricochet meetups, the slow and steady and rewarding work of turning America around.  Despite all of that.

As you know, we peg the cost of a membership to the cost of a Grandé Latté at the flagship Starbucks in Seattle.

But coffee prices are going up.  From Good.is:

At the exact moment that rare beans are becoming all the rage, all beans are becoming rarer. The price of a cup of coffee—whether it be a $6 pour-over, a $2.50 dark roast at Starbucks, or a $1.50 mug of diner swill—is being driven up by a complex combination of weather events, pest and fungus outbreaks, speculation on commodities exchanges, an unstable labor market in the developing world, and an unprecedented thirst for good coffee among a growing global middle class. The problem, in simple economic terms, is that supply has gone down and demand has gone up.

So be forewarned.  A Grandé Latté is going up.  Lock in Ricochet membership today.

Rob,

Commodities markets serve a vital function. Do not buy into the"speculation" demagoguery.

Maybe you should peg the Ricochet fee to the happy hour price of a Guinness at the Ropewalk Tavern in Baltimore.

I'm not really sure how it would affect the price of Ricochet, but at least we wouldn't be at the mercy of "pest and fungus outbreaks."

A $1.50 mug of diner swill? Diner swill is supposed to cost a quarter. You throw your quarter into the cup next to the coffee maker and pour your own.

What is this world coming to?

I think Ricochet should start subsidizing any amount that goes above the current price. Sooner or later, I'll be resented by newer, poorer members who didn't get my fat cat price of $3.47. I would hate for this to divide our membership into the haves and have nots. I fear class warfare soon.

I'm not worried.  Pretty soon Starbucks will reduce the size of a Grandé Latté to keep the price in check.  Maybe that means  you will do fewer podcasts though . . . . :(

Maybe we should just drink regular coffee. How much is a grande brew of the day?

Diane Ellis, Ed.

BREAKING:

The price of a grande latte at the flagship Starbucks in Pike Place Market is now $3.67!

Ben Domenech

My first real job was, I readily admit, as a Starbucks barista - I wonder how much the price of a grande latte has gone up since 1998?

I don't drink fancy-shmancy latte's.  I drink coffee, black, no sugar.  That cost is going up as well.

As a concerned observer of the brewed coffee phenomenon, I've been studying price data for many years.  It has come to my attention that a warning to Ricochetistas is in order.  Be prepared to take to the streets -- or the ether, as the case may be -- to protest impending fee hikes.  I believe that market manipulation by The Man is involved here.  The history of coffee prices was quite flat for many years.  But in 2009, closely approximating the beta testing of Ricochet, there began to be a dramatic rise in prices; a "hockey stick", if you will.

Once again I will advise:  buy an annual membership (like I do) to avoid the volatility of the coffee market.  Come on!  You know you'll stay a year!  And you'll have none of those pesky "we can't bill you" notices when your credit card gets hacked and you have to get it reissued.

Pretty soon we will learn that Rob Long is secretly influencing worldwide coffee markets in the same way that Al Gore influences carbon-credit markets.

Where's the GAO when you need it?!

Rob, what about those of us who drink tea? (Just asking...)

I tend to be a glass half-full type of guy so I'm just glad a subscription isn't directly tied to the price of gold.

Whatever happened to volunteerism here?  There are freebie freeloaders all over who read, and listen to the main podcast every week, but are not members.  I really think that it is important to offer them an opportunity for nobility like the millionaires club that is out asking for tax increases.

Ricochet should have a tip jar, so that people can kick in the odd fifteen bucks out of gratitude.  And to cover Rob's start-up expenses.  Pay Blue Yeti.  Diane's college loans. Mickey's new union-built Chevy.

Unfortunately Rob's been losing at the track so the price for newcomers is increasing to $357.00 per month (he's been losing a lot!)

The good news is that the price increase will keep it nice and cozy for the 500 or so of us who are already members...

No no no.  Rob's $1,500-a-day Faberge Egg habit is to blame.
