I chose the second option. A zinger well-delivered would do Romney no end of good, and if he were to rock Obama back on his heels we might see panic and folly on the part of the Obama campaign.

But I believe also that a tie is a win for the challenger in a race like this.

I was just watching MSNBC and they said that Romney had lost the debate, evidently it was a foot fault and the referee threw him out.

Referee Gwen Ifill later said " Never have I seen such unsportsmanlike behaviour. Governor Romney's toe was clearly on the white line when he released his bowling ball."

Darn it, we were so close -

One comment on the debate. The first thirty minutes count a whole lot more than the rest of the debate.

The reason is simple. Eventually, people tune out. Those of us on eastern standard time think about the alarm clock in the morning and go to bed. Others, after a while, prefer their own company to that of two blowhards.

Of course, if Romney does not present himself as a robot and is not timid but goes for the jugular . . . everyone loves drama.

I voted for #1.  But I also think a moment like that is a combination of preparation, opportunity, and sheer talent.  So I certainly won't hold it against Romney if he only does no harm.  For a Republican candidate in this climate, that is a feat in itself.

It is not about the debates. The American people need to compare resumes and I'm fearful they may not.

UGH. I don't like option number one because the MSM will ignore anything they want to. Option number two sounds condescending to Romney. And if what I read is correct, most folks have made up their mind and tonight will only influence a small portion of the electorate, the undecideds. And didn't Dave Carter suggest they are all still asleep? Or watching sports or working.

I'll pass on the poll, watch the debates, probably scan the internet for "reactions"and try and maintain my sense of humor and optimism. And vote for Romney-Ryan as soon as my absentee ballot arrives next week.

My drinking-game rule suggestion: If Romney reacts to an Obama lie by suddenly blurting out, “bull****!”, consume your entire liquor cabinet.

Sound bites and zingers are overrated.  They always sound manufactured.  Romeny needs to keep pounding on Obama about his pathetic record.  He shouldn't worry about being nice.  He needs to be ruthless and attack Obama at every turn.  Too much there to call his out on.  The media wont do it.  He's not going to win the likability race but if he goes Tyson in his prime on Obama and gets on top of him and never lets up it will pay dividends.  Who cares if the media calls him mean.

If Mitt Romney says the words "Thomas Sowell" I will bathe in gin for the rest of the week before going to work.

None of the above. Romney should stay away from zingers or pith because he doesn't do those well and the risk of backfire is great. However, Romney needs a more than workman-like performance in which he displays mere competency and a plausible alternative. Instead, he needs to make a forceful case: both FOR his candidacy and AGAINST Obama's record. Doesn't need to be flashy, only compelling, simple, and sound.

Romney needs to come across as presidential. If he looks well prepared and a reasonable alternative - he wins.

I want Mitt to shoot for the second option and be nimble enough on his feet to strike a 1st option blow if one presents itself.  The goal shouldn't be to have a 1st option strike.   He'll have 3 trys at this.  Don't strike out on the first pitch.

Yikes, who comes across more "presidential" in the traditional sense than Romney?

I voted for 2. He should go for 1 if the opportunity presents itself, but if it seems forced then it'll backfire.

I voted that it doesn't matter, but mostly because I am certain that no matter what happens the press will say either that Obama won or Romney lost.

I'm for #1.  I hope he'll be aggressive and catch Obama flat-footed with some well-chosen words.  He has to take the media out of the game, otherwise it's "In tonight's debate, President Obama did unexpectedly well against his challenger, that Mormon running dog of reckless capitalism..."

More generally, though, what matters more to the election -- how normal people judge the debate, or the interpretive dance of the Pravda set?

It feels to me like this is it.

It's now or never.

This is one he's gotta win.

If Romney wins this debate, he'll win big in November.

If not, I think the rest of the campaign will be a slow death of a thousand cuts, and Romney will lose a close election.

I'm praying hard!

From the looks of half the comments, Ricochet is ripening for Stephen Green.

I think the public is generally unaware of how many of the arguments that the president makes against Romney/Ryan are blatant lies.  When the president repeats one of these arguments tonight, for example his mischaracterization of Romney's tax plan or Ryan's medicare plan, I would love to hear Romney call him on it.  I would love to hear him say flat out "that is not true", and point out how often the president has told that particular untruth.
