Ricochet 2011 Gift Guide
In my house, we give gifts throughout the Christmas season. And, in fact, I wait for the after-Christmas sales to really get going. I need to get gifts for people aged 2 on through 75.
Could you help me out and tell me what some of your favorite gifts were? Either the ones you gave or the ones you received?
For what it's worth, my 4-year-old's favorite was this World's Largest Piano Mat from Grandma and Grandpa H. I asked my 2-year-old for her favorite gift and she rambled on and on about "the polka-dot one." I'm pretty sure she's referring to the way I wrapped some hand-me-down pajamas from the cousins in polka-dot wrapping paper.
I liked this sampler of Penhaligon's I got for my husband -- he can pick whichever one he likes and I'll start saving for next Christmas.
So, for those taking part in the gift giving merriment, what was the best gift you gave or received?

Re: Ricochet 2011 Gift Guide
I used to be the sole cultivator of those potatoes in North America - they were smuggled in via diplomatic pouch to my great uncle, who lived in Central Idaho. When I went off to college, we gave samples to local farmers in Oregon, and a few years later....

The computers in the S household needed updating so we all gave each other new Mac things: MacBook Pros for me and daughter S, iPad for hubby. Plus we went to Hawaii. The older we get, the less we want "stuff" and the more we enjoy going places.

Nerf cannons!
Several years ago Drug Town had a shopping cart full of clearance items for a buck. I bought several Nerf guns with no clear plan for giving. (They operate with a pistoning action, expelling something like a furry ping-pong ball via compressed air and can't possibly hurt anyone.) I took a couple with me on vacation the following summer and dropped them on friends and promptly forgot all about them. Last year when I was visiting I saw the Nerf guns on top of the toy pile and cocked my head quizzically regarding them. I didn't want to ask, and Patty came to my rescue. 'Oh, yes, those are favorites with the [grand]kids. Thank you for bringing them.' (without irony, I hasten to say - or maybe with a touch of irony, when she has to chase down the balls for the littles)
So a cheap, not-well-thought-out gift has made me "the fun uncle" to (now) three generations. It doesn't get better than that.

I took my wife out to dinner and a movie with the Seattle Ricocheteers. I dare anyone to top that.

My favorite gift ever was the Ferragamo handbag I gave to my mother- a luxury item she could well have afforded, but was far too frugal to buy.

Rob Long:
And what husband wouldn't want one or two excellent cigars? Because with every cigar comes the promise -- and the necessity -- of two hours of solitude.
Ah... that would be my husband. After being raised by two parents who smoked like chimneys, he can't stand any sort of tobacco product. But that's OK. He married an asthmatic, so it all works out.
When dear hubs wants an hour or two of solitude, all he has to do is watch a chick-flick. No kidding.

Don't know about the chick flick thing (give me a good war movie!), but I have never been able to stand the smell of cigar smoke. And I smoked (cigarettes) for several years when I was younger. Never have understood the attraction to cigars.
If the goal is indulgence, however... a good Pinot Noir with some chocolate truffles. Mmmmm!

You confess to no pocketknife, and now this, GA.
Clearly, you are secure in your masculinity.

Darn straight! I'm quite secure in that area of my life - I've even been known to wear pink shirts on occasion. Still not completely sure about the blue shoes my wife & daughter got me for Christmas, however... ;-)

Here is a shot of my favorite gift. It is a photograph of our riverfront in Chattanooga at dawn on a foggy morning. It stopped me in my tracks when my husband and I were at a show of local artists. When I wasn't looking, hubby went and got it for me. Please try to ignore my eldest son's feet!

Used to attend a church in Sacramento where the preacher was agin pink shirts. I didn't own one, but I had a very narrow red & white pinstripe that looked pink from a distance. Found frequent occasion to wear it on Sundays.
