Next Thursday, September 2, we invite Ricochet members to join us in San Francisco for drinks and something decidedly different: live, face-to-face conversation! Among the contributors we’re expecting are Peter, Rob, James, Diane, George, and Claire.

We’ll start at 5:30 and end at about 7:00. No speeches, no rancorous exchanges about the Third Amendment, and no punching bags (right, Claire?). Just some drinks, maybe a bite or two to eat, and a chance to meet each other.

Ricochet members can find the location here, and we’ll keep a reminder (visible only to members) at the top of our home page until the event’s over. Going forward, we’d like to confine these messages to people in the relevant geography, but we don’t have this capability just yet.

We hope you can make it!

I can't wait to see whether it is ever possible to get such a distinguished cast of contributors together any place except the left or right coast :-))

I still promote Danville as the Last Full Measure Of Devotion meet-up site.

Here here! How about the smack middle of the country, St. Louis, Missery. Missery loves company....

I think we need to encourage a Riochet Contributor road show. Those of us in IL/MO/MN need some culture, don't you know? If you come to the Twin Cities (after the State Fair, of course) I'll bring the cigars. But not those goofy little ones that Lileks smokes.

Only if you like.

As we stated a few weeks ago, Minneapolis is soft-circled as the next venue.

But The Logo is feeling a bit slighted. I was made on a computer, you see. And the computer was invented in a state that's conspicuous in its absence from the IL/MO/MN construct you introduced, Patrick. What have you against my people?

Well, you're getting closer, but still not quite there yet for me... I'd attend any function held in the Rocky Mountain West.

Texas, as you might expect from its size, is Ricochet's number two state in terms of visitors:

  1. California
  2. Texas
  3. New York
  4. Virginia
  5. Illinois
  6. Florida
  7. Pennsylvania
  8. Minnesota
  9. Washington
  10. Ohio

If you adjust it by population, it turns out this way:

  1. D.C. (by a mile)
  2. Minnesota
  3. Virginia
  4. Colorado
  5. Washington
  6. Connecticut
  7. California
  8. Missouri
  9. Massachusetts
  10. New York

Whoa, whoa, whoa...

You pull rancorous exchanges out of my quiver and I got nothin'.

I sometimes miss living on the Peninsula! Now, the question is, should we in the hinterlands get coverage of the event—as in the Rico Society Page--so that we can all, “pull up a chair,” or would foreknowledge of such a thing destroy the spontaneity and authenticity? I think perhaps the latter. But, now, if something really significant happened... Well, I hope you all have a fun night out at [ed: location of gathering].

How about that?

I had planned my first comment to Ricochet to be a suggestion of drinks nights with members and contributors. The occasional face-to-face meeting seems natural, considering the website's emphasis on conversation. The New Criterion's folks do this, and other kinds of events, too.

I kept putting off joining Ricochet (despite being a silent follower since the pre-launch days) until today when I saw this post. Someone beat me to the suggestion, but it only confirmed to me that the people here are convivial.

I hope it's a great event. One to repeat in Los Angeles, or even the Bay Area again, with, say, a week and a half's notice.
