We've known an announcement from Rick Perry was imminent, but it looks like the week has finally arrived:

Rick Perry intends to use a speech in South Carolina on Saturday to make clear that he's running for president, POLITICO has learned.

According to two sources familiar with the plan, the Texas governor will remove any doubt about his White House intentions during his appearance at a RedState conference in Charleston.

It's uncertain whether Saturday will mark a formal declaration, but Perry's decision to disclose his intentions the same day as the Ames straw poll — and then hours later make his first trip to New Hampshire — will send shock waves through the race and upend whatever results come out of the straw poll.

The man sure knows how to time an entrance and upstage his competitors.  Perhaps Perry will consider the winner of the straw poll as a contender for the Veep spot on his ticket.

Good news!  I'd take a Texas economy vs US comparison for the campaign.  The GOP would have a candidate with a solid record to run on as opposed to the Dems.

I'm cautiously overjoyed (is that even possible?).  At the very least, he will inject much needed muscle and bravado into the Republican side.  The GOP still seems so gun shy over Bush's "swagger" that they recoil from anything remotely aggressive (Rep. Bachmann notwithstanding).  Perry won't be retiring or soft-spoken, which will be a welcome contrast to Romney and Pawlenty.

I'll make a prediction, too:  Perry's entry into the race means that Palin will not run.  We may even see an early endorsement.

Perry will be a strong favorite when he gets in the race unless Palin also gets in. I don't think he would make the effort unless he knew he had her blessing. He might be able to win if she were also running but it would be less likely and I don't think he would take that chance.

Perry will not pick a primary also-ran for veep. Perry/Rubio will be an unbeatable ticket.

Without taking sides on whether Perry's entrance into the Republican fray for the presidential nomination is good or bad, I offer the following observation from a Republican party campaign consultant friend living in Austin.  Apparently Perry is not that exciting within the Texas Republican Party.  Internal Republican polls show him polling around number 8 among Texas Republicans.  Take it for what it's worth, or not.  Just an observation.

Not only that, but Perry is everything our recent presidents are not and nothing that they are. He's not an Ivy Leaguer; rather, he has an animal sciences degree from A&M. He was actually in the military and not just in an air guard billet his father bought him. He has a record instead of two autobiographies. He is a farmboy, not the Eurozone's image of a cowboy. More importantly, he's a man in the classical sense, not some Europeanized metrosexual. I'm not being misoginistic saying that. I'd take either gender provided the candidate had a spine.

I know almost nothing about Perry.  For better or worse, I'm looking forward to getting to know him.

After the non-entries of other friends of Ricochet, I know its not wise or fair to burden a candidate with the impossible task of uniting the party under the banner of severely limiting the size and scope of the federal government, but by God I expect Rick Perry to take up this challenge and WIN!

George W. Bush was a qualified F-102 pilot, which at the time was a strategic interceptor.  He volunteered for duty in Vietnam but that would have required transition to the F-105 or F-4.  George Bush was a jet fighter pilot and that is the "real military".

There are a lot of reasons to criticize Bush's policies and philosophy of governance, but, the constant slander about his military service is just wrong.

They can say all they want about their concerns over another Texan running for the top office but I will give them no heed until they explain why we have had such disappointing prospects from Massachusetts, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, New Mexico, Arizona, Kansas, et. al.

All I can say is thank God for Rick Perry.

I grew up in Midland, Tx. I know the truth of Bush. I respect him for many things, but his military service is not one of them.

Bush qualified in the F-102 - that is a major accomplishment and is real military service.  Where you grew up is irrelevant to the fact that Bush was a qualified jet fighter pilot.

Being qualified to do something in the military and actually doing it are not the same thing.

Bush qualified in the F-102, full filled his commitment, and received an honorable discharge.  Period.

Yes. And I give him all the respect he deserves for that. It is still not the same as being active duty, especially during a time of war.
