In the New York Times today, a long article headlined, "Paint Creek, the Town Perry Left Behind," in which Deborah Sontag, the reporter, makes clear that she has talked to every resentful, envious, or otherwise malcontented resident of Rick Perry's tiny hometown.

We hear that Rick Perry has turned his back on Paint Creek, that residents have never forgiven him for changing his registration from Democratic to Republican, that he failed to visit the town after flooding several years ago, and that residents resent the role he played in the Texas redistricting in 2003 because the process deprived Paint Creek's Congressman, Democrat Charlie Stenholm, of his district.

And then, forty-five paragraphs from the beginning and four paragraphs from the end (I counted), the story introduces us to "Mayor John Gannaway of Haskell...[who] scoffs at those who gripe about Mr. Perry.

"We got people in this town, doesn't matter if you offered free love and nickel beer on the square, they'd be against it," he said.  "Now if you ask what Rick's done specifically for Haskell, I'll tell you proudly:  nothing.  Because if he had, somebody would have said, 'That little son-of-a-gun is playing favorites,' and turned it against him."

The chance to vote for John Gannaway.

As if I needed another reason to wish I lived in Texas.

How many of those forty-nine paragraphs were one sentence jobs?

Echoes of 2008 when the press dragged a few Benjamins through Wasilla to see how many malcontents would step forward to bad-mouth their former mayor.

"Perry Creek, the Town Paint Left Behind"

I appreciated this article by Sherwin Williams in the Tint Today trade journal. Discusses how Bush ruined another town by banning color. Rick Perry's grandfather, Red was the town founder and they have had a spat ever since.

Peter you are welcome to come join us here in Houston anytime, though our mayor Annise Parker may not be as good as John Gannaway, she has a warm relationship with the gov.

One would not make out that Texans have more fixed thinking than anywhere else. Know a good many fine folks in The Lone Star State.

Just never look for a horsemeat steak there or suggest same.
