Rick Perry's latest.

Good enough?

Coming on the heels of his decision to opt out of a number of upcoming debates, the ad strikes me as overly defensive. While it succeeds at reminding us that no, Perry is indeed not a talker, I think it fails to do anything constructive.

Also, you'll note that the ad marks a significant departure from the style we'd grown used to seeing from Perry's (and formerly Pawlenty's) ad genius, Lucas Baiano. That's because the Perry campaign has purchased significant radio and cable television ad space in both Iowa and New Hampshire for this ad. And though dramatic movie trailer type ads are the stuff of a viral YouTube campaign, they don't translate especially well to the air waves.

I just find it ironic that this ad is nothing but a politician ... talking.

It's no Yellow Flowers , but it is to the point, as long as that point is NObama.

Well, there's politicians talking to effectively communicate their ideas an/or plans, and then there's politicians yammering on ad nauseam because that's apparently all they know how to do.

Diane, I can't remember where I heard it (maybe Hugh Hewitt), but Perry is supposedly committed to the next 5 debates.

As to the ad, it's very good.

To see Perry think on his feet, stay on message, and not sound like a moron watch him at the National Association of Manufacturers forum. (I would embed the link, but work computers are being nannyish today: http://youtu.be/FeKKY-sVLgU)

Wow.  Perry is really, really good here.  Just terrifically impressive.  As soon as our embedding feature is up and working again, I'll put up a post on it.  Thanks, King Prawn!

His "drunk speech" was a marvel to behold as well. I think he finally figured out that a stick up the wazzoo is not a prerequisite for being president.

I think the ad was great. And he is pretty good talker. The issue is whether he is a good debater. He isn't a good debater. But debating is different than talking and it's different than negotiating.

The problem for Perry is that most people really do want someone who is a slick candidate. In the self-selecting worlds of Ricochet and other sites, the distinction Perry makes is important. For most people, it isn't.

I like it!

I've said that in the atmosphere of the other GOP candidate choices. We have to go with somebody and, right now, nobody is really very appealing.

But the good news is that the legacy media will have to change the dance step with each new front runner. At some point they may decide that there are too many people to attack.

Gov. Perry needs a few solid debate performances. Geez ...

Oh, that's probably a good thing.

While I agree to an extent with Diane that it may come off as a tad defensive, I do like that it puts the focus on Perry's record of success in Texas.  That's something that has gotten pushed to the background amid all the noise of poor debate performances and personal bickering.  He has a record to be proud of, and he should remind people of it.  It's much more appealing to me to see a candidate who is confidently touting their successes and desire to apply it to the country than to see another ad disparaging opponents.

Perry's latest line of attack which I picked up on in his "drunk speech" is that he has a record (a shot at Cain), has a plan (a general shot), and has been a consistent conservative (shot at Romney.) If he can get that message out he has hope for a comeback. If we dismiss all three points based only on debate performance we are being a tad shallow in our selection process, in my opinion.

Ditching the Perry Como/Sominex and going with the Red Bull has really upped his game.

Brief. Sunny. Likeable. Takes on Obama, but not in a mean spirited way. Emphasizes his own record. Forward looking. With a good balance between experience and outsiderness.

Best Perry ad to date.

Good enough.  I think the party will be better off once they quit listening to Karl Rove.

Perry is set for a come back with plenty of time to do it.

Not bad.  As I said before, don't count Perry out yet.

I am liking Herman Cain but am glad to see Perry put out a polished product. He is likely a better man than he has been allowed to portray himself. I am hoping that Gingrich can pick up his game as well. I especially enjoy Newt's debate criticisms of the debate formats and I believe the media expects and will allow of our candidates to do their dirty work for them.

If that's the real Rick Perry and not the sleepy guy we've seen at the debates then the race is on.
