Rick Perry Being Thoroughly Impressive. No, Really.

In a thread below, King Prawn claimed that there existed a video in which it was possible "to see Perry think on his feet, stay on message, and not sound like a moron."
You know what? King Prawn was right.

Holy crap. That was impressive. I didn't think he had it in him.
It wasn't just how he strung words together to form sentences, or how those sentences conveyed complete thoughts. More importantly, those complete thoughts were quite good. Way to go, Rick!

Sigh. I'm still not sold. Hitting his stride every once in a great while just isn't acceptable in this particular election. Heck, Sarah Palin would have been a better candidate at this point -- she would have been a better debater than Perry, and been more articulate on the issues. Remember how we were all on edge during her debate with Biden? Would she blow it? Gheesh, I don't want to go through that for the next year with Perry.

Weird thought: maybe Perry can stand up to attacks from the left easily but was out of shape or out of sort being hit from the right? His biggest failings at the debates were when he was attacked for being too liberal, too squishy. When he is hit for the Texas economy, tax rates, oil, etc, he seems a lot better.

Another possibility also remains: Perry had back surgery in July, and he may have simply been physically limited until his recovery had progressed to a certain point. In his commercials and interviews over the last several weeks he has appeared physically healthier in general. Only time will tell. If he behaves in the next several debates as he has behaved in the last few weeks he may get another look by many. He's far from perfect, as are all the candidates, but I would hate to pass him by completely based only on a few debate debacles.

Re: Rick Perry Being Thoroughly Impressive. No, Really.
Perry sounded good here. My one concern is his idea that federalism allows states to "pick winners and losers" but not the federal government. While that may be true, "what is lawful is not always profitable." State government central planning its economy is just as bad for the individual as federal government doing it. Come visit me in California if you doubt my words.
Wind power in California, Texas, Oklahoma--wherever--could not exist without government subsidies, subsidies that hover around twenty times that of oil subsidies. Perry, like most governors, loves to tweak his state's economy (see also, redevelopment). Will he really be able to resist that urge as president?

I think the difference is the increased accountability of a state government to its constituents. It's still not the firmest of foundations, but it's miles ahead of the national government.
I think (hope) he would remain faithful to what he espouses concerning conservatism. Just imagine the next great crisis and the president saying, "O.k. states. Each of you come up with a solution. May the best state win."
