In a thread below, King Prawn claimed that there existed a video in which it was possible "to see Perry think on his feet, stay on message, and not sound like a moron."

You know what?  King Prawn was right.

It's the corner he's painted himself into. This is the Perry everyone expected to show up when he announced his candidacy. It could just be a blip, but it could be the start of a comeback. I'm not holding my breath, but I am slightly more hopeful than I was a month ago.

Good. Now, if he can make this level of response the rule rather than an exception, count me in as a Perry supporter.

I think this says it all about Perry's campaign- even though I'd immediately play something posted by Peter Robinson, I just almost can't do it. I'm just so afraid, when I see Perry talk, that he's going to say something awful, suddenly act like he doesn't want to be there, or call the audience "heartless."

If we allow game show debates to determine who we select for President we will desrve the governance we get in return. I think even marginally engaged Americans are yearning for leadership with substance. The speeches and extended interviews I have seen from Perry have been as substantive as any of the clowns left standing. But the process makes them all look like clowns to me. Maybe Perry shoild adopt that Dire Straits refrain as his campaign song: Clowns to the left of me, clowns to the right of me.

My theory of the difference is that he's thrown off the campaign strategy that was binding him. He's given up on trying to win by a set formula other than just being Rick Perry.

Get him on Uncommon Knowledge, Peter. Do it soon.

Nah, just keep having Thomas Sowell on to talk about batting stances. Easily the best part of any UK episode.

This would actually be a fantastic campaign strategy. UK gets a lot of traffic from younger, engaged individuals. With the spread of material via social media these days an UK interview could drum up significant support for a candidate from a constituency largely written off by the republicans. Imagine how well his $10K degree pitch will sell to those staring down education debt equal to a nice house.

Thomas Sowell will be interesting in a few months time. Getting Perry more time to shine, while sharpening his thought on a lot of these issues, is something that is kinda time critical. eg. It'd be nice to challenge him a little on his claim that states should be picking winners and losers. I'm sure that Peter Robinson would be helpful at unpacking the principles involved.

That wasn't just not sounding like a moron. That was a real defense of conservatism.

Not DS, but still an apropos reference.

Yes, I'm stuck in the middle with you,
And I'm wondering what it is I should do.
It's so hard to keep this smile from my face.
Losing control, yeah, I'm all over the place.
Clowns to the left of me, Jokers to the right...
Here I am, stuck i

Clowns to the left

He should join Cain and Gingrich in their Lincoln-Douglas style debates. This would allow him to speak about the issues in this format while also addressing both the Cain and Gingrich economic plans directly. I have seen him before working a room in town halls and he is so much more effective in this format than in the game-show debates. I wouldn't mind him participating in the next debate a week or so from now then announcing that he is joining Cain and Gingrich.

This is a "thoroughly impressive" Perry? He hit the right notes, and it was better than the debates.

It was also an easier setting. Here is a gentle transcription from 12:47-13:13:

"We're charging way too much money for the education that we're giving our kids, and get focused in on these technology sides, of the type of education they need, but also using technology. The idea that we're having to force these kids to come to brick and mortar to be educated, that's the old way of thinking. We need to be looking at online ways to be able to educate these kids to get the types of skills that we need..."

I'm sure Reihan Salam was doing cartwheels. But who cares? All normal, apolitical,  Americans heard was: "Blah, blah, college education is rip-off. Blah, blah, I knows how fix it."

That, btw, is prior to the distortion our pals in the MSM will surely provide.

Absolutely. But ignoring the issues in favour of the horserace is so seductive. Look at Peter's post: it's all about the style, but it's the substance that is truly spectacular. A few months ago we were pining for some real meaty policy proposals, but when (for example) Romney comes out with a 160-page economy and jobs document all anyone can do is joke about his 59 bullet point summary.

Ricochet, I am disappoint.

Peter Robinson you are doing great work.  Also, I second Professor Rahe's exhortation.

I'd like to see someone challenge Perry on that also. I disagree with whoever said this was a defense of conservatism. It reinforced my impression of Perry as a Big Government Federalist. Given the field, that may ultimately be acceptable if he's serious enough about the federalism part. Time will tell. I also disagree that Perry was "thoroughly impressive" here. He was certainly better than we've seen him, but that's a very low bar. He kept repeating himself in spite of the questions asked and reminded me of his bad lip sync video in a few spots. He's improving though, and I think we'll see him turn in a decent debate performance before all is said and done.
