Marco Rubio

Marco Rubio cannot be Vice President.

That's, at least, what this latest Reuters hit piece would like you to believe.  Following on the heels of the Washington Post's invented story about Marco Rubio's "embellishment" of his family history, Reuters claims a presidential candidate wouldn't dream of selecting Rubio as a running mate because of his embarrassing financial history and his contempt for Hispanics.

The only problem with Reuters' narrative is that it depends on a string of completely fabricated statements.  The Daily Caller's Matt Lewis has done the yeoman's work of debunking the story here.  He counted seven—seven!—errors in the story.  We editors found an eighth.  Reuters claims:

He also voted against Obama's healthcare overhaul, which is popular among many low-income Hispanics.

"He's on the wrong side on every issue that matters to Hispanics," said Fernand Amandi with Bendixen & Amandi, a political consulting firm in Miami that has been retained by the Obama campaign. "He's going to have to answer to those positions."

While we're certain Marco Rubio would have voted against ObamaCare if he could have, the fact of the matter is that Marco Rubio became a Senator on January 3, 2011. ObamaCare—the "Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act"—was passed in the Senate on December 24, 2009 and signed into law on March 23, 2010.

The takeaway: If media hit pieces must rely on false dirt with which to smear Sen. Rubio, there's probably no real dirt out there.  He'd make for a pretty ideal VP pick.

He's possibly the best VP pick for Santorum, and almost as good a pick for Gingrich. For Mitt, a half term in the Senate probably wouldn't be helpful. Still, with that being his biggest flaw, there's a lot to be said for him, even for Mitt. I think I'd prefer Governors McDonnell or Martinez, Senator Portman, or General Petraeus, but no one else I can think of.

Opposing Obamacare just makes him a conservative.  Any other Republican VP would oppose it, too.  Even if the claims were true, the article is smearing him for not voting with his race.  Does anyone detect more than a hint of racism here?

Why would Rubio even want to lend his starpower to one of the pathetic politicians we are about to nominate?

He should wait four more years and run himself.

There are only 50 states with 2 senators each, available in the upper house. Of those 100, one of the very worst, Bill Nelson of Florida, needs to be defeated this year; It isn't looking great. Rubio leaving the Senate to become a running mate deprives FL, and the nation, of a significant voice in the Senate.

People from states that send one or two worthless senators to D.C., every election cycle, need to stop trying to strip FL conservatives of the only decent thing they have achieved nationally, against staunch opposition from the SRCC and the GOP establishment.

How about you work really hard to get rid of the dross you send to the Senate. before you come after the guy we have only had representing us for 1 year?  Our GOP stable is bare because too many of you are allowing your states to stand people for elective office that you wouldn't want your presidential candidate to tap.

Diane, I actually agree with Reuters in that Marco Rubio should not be the Vice Presidential Nominee.

Marco Rubio should be the Republican Party's presidential candidate for the 2012 election!

They get remedial training on how to add escape hatches to their fabricated hit pieces.

It sucks to be a republican and a minority and a politician.  2 out of 3 is fine.  However you get all of them and they(the mainstream media) come getcha'.  I think they do it out of fear of losing their monopoly over minority votes, and how it is almost completely centered around identity politics.

Good to know that the litmus test for a viable Republican VP candidate is that he supports Obamacare.  Next up, Reuters will explain why Cardinal Such-and-such can't become the next Pope because he opposes abortion.

This is why many good people choose to stay in private life rather than be slandered (legally?) by the media.

They are promoted to editors so they can approve even more of this drivel.  Usually, the editorial board suggests stories to a writer.  It would not have made it to press without their approval.

One error in an article is just that.

Eight is a deliberate misrepresentation of his record and past, or gross negligence.

Either way, completely unacceptable, Reuters. Censure the reporter and issue a retraction and apology.

Agreed. That the article hasn't been retracted is an embarrassment.

Agree with this observation, although I was witness to the great Marco revolution here in the state of Florida. James' point, I believe, is that a serious candidate for leader of the Free World looks for some additional political experience/gravitas to add to the ticket.

I'd vote for Governor McDonnell or the General and look to Rubio for backup in the legislative body.

Exactly. I continue to be annoyed with the lack of respect for the legislative branch.
