I found this article in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, which talked about the list of potential veep choices for the Republicans in 2012.  Here it is:

  • Governor Nikki Haley (South Carolina)
  • Senator Marco Rubio (Florida)
  • Senator Rob Portman (Ohio)
  • Governor Susana Martinez (New Mexico)
  • Governor Bob McDonnell (Virginia)
  • Senator Kelly Ayotte (New Hampshire)
  • Governor Brian Sandoval (Nevada)
  • Governor Chris Christie (New Jersey)
  • Governor Rick Snyder (Michigan)
  • Governor Luis Fortuno (Peurto Rico)

Personally, I don't really agree with the list.  I'm not sure why Ayotte is on there.  It seems to have only people elected in the past couple years.  I'm honestly not sure who I would add to the list.

What do you think?

I'd add Ambassador John Bolton, and have State report to him.

OMG!  You just made me realize what my dream ticket is... Ryan/Bolton!

Back to the VP question, it would seem Portman and Rubio are obvious choices given that the VP candidate usually, at most, helps win his home state.  However, winning the Senate is nearly as important as winning the White House, so I'd rule out any senators this time.  Unlike those who argue for keeping Ryan where he is, I really do want our senators to sit tight and increase their numbers.

The governors are all very new to their positions as far as I can tell.  And governors are the farm team for future presidential competitions, so I'd rule them out for 2012 as well.

This leaves people who are already running, like Bachmann, Cain, and Pawlenty on the short list if Perry or Ryan was to enter the race and win the nomination.  I particularly like the Ryan/Bolton match-up because their areas of expertise complement so well.  I'm not sure Perry needs Bolton.

Dan: They're all rookies, currently holding very  important jobs requiring their full attention for the next several years.

M1919A4: John Bolton for National Security Advisor in the next Republican administration, because I seriously question what it is, exactly, that the State Dept does.

I'm with Dan, though McDonnell and Portman are a bit more seasoned than the rest.

I wonder if Mitch Daniels could sell his family on a Veep run...not quite the same grind.

Right now that's the top of the ticket.

I can't imagine Chris Christie in a subservient Vice-Presidential role.  He'd be stepping on the President all day long.

Why are our VP candidates better than our Presidential candidates? Daniels as a VP candidate would be awesome - didn't think about him jumping on that train. My top candidates are Rubio, Ryan, Jindal, Portman, or Tim Tebow.

What are the constitutional restrictions on VP candidates? Can Mark Steyn be on the ticket?

Based on the current holder of this post I would like to add my name to the list.

Im very punctual and I "feel" that the  large and very accurate clock in my front yard will improve my on time performance.

If elected I will get a hair cut.

Jindal seems to have pretty much disappeared, not for any good reason I can think of.  Don't you get points for quietly doing your job?

No, but people like Rubio and Haley and Snyder just seem a little inexperienced. There are good candidates with more experience.  Like Jim DeMint, for example.

Too many newbies.  Let them prove themselves by doing the jobs to which they were just elected.

How about someone like Judd Gregg (assuming he renounces his light bulb vote) - he has both legislative and executive experience, and by most accounts is a pretty bright guy.

This strikes me as a pretty realistic list, with a few exceptions. Christie won't be anyone's VP, Snyder can't leave Michigan this early into his reform agenda and still expect to help bring the state into the Republican column, and Ayotte is on here purely because she's a woman from a swing state -- but there are many more talented women and more important swing states.

Any serious assesment -- in addition to including all the current candidates and those who turned down the chance to run -- would also include Allen West, Jeb Bush, Paul Ryan, Bobby Jindal, and Pat Toomey.

Jeb Bush?  Talk about a ticket-killer.

I really like Pat Toomey, but this isn't the time for a two-nice-white-guys ticket.

Now Allen West, there's a guy who would supercharge the the campaign.  He's the only guy (aside from Trump) who's telling the unvarnished, bare-knuckled truth about Obama - and because he is who he is, he can do it loudly, unrelentingly and with impunity.

You mean the Governor from TurboTax?  Sorry.  I voted for him but he lost my support and respect when he sold out to the tax prep industry and killed the Virginia I-File tax filing website.  Another crony capitalist is what we don't need.
