Report: Paul Ryan To Endorse Romney
As reported by BuzzFeed:
Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, the icon of the anti-spending movement in the Republican Party, has communicated to former Senator Rick Santorum that he will endorse Mitt Romney, according to a source familiar with the conversation.
Ryan's staff called Rick Santorum today as a courtesy to announce the news. The announcement from Ryan himself is expected this weekend, most likely during one of the Sunday shows, the source said — and in the run-up to the Republican primary.
I thought he might do it tomorrow morning. I guess Sunday morning makes more sense. We'll have to wait and hear what he says to see if this is an embrace of Romney or, as it was with Rubio, just an embrace of the electoral reality.

Re: Report: Paul Ryan To Endorse Romney
ParisParamus: This is kind of a no-brainer at this point.
I think we're down to Ryan, DeMint, McDonnell, (Eric) Cantor, or Jan Brewer as likely VPs. My preference is for Ryan. The guy's just so solid, quick, and decent that it gives me hope for the country. Let Sen. Rubio become Gov. Rubio, and then President--there's time. · 4 hours ago

I feel some mental--or is it emotional--relief throwing in the towel on my Quixotic hopes and lining up behind Romney. It's been months since I've enthusiastically agreed with a post of yours, but this is good sense. You can say I told you so. I can take it.
Almost forgot: Go Romney/Ryan!

Re: Report: Paul Ryan To Endorse Romney
Did any of you expect otherwise? Romney has essentially won.
There's two kind of politicians:
Those who tow the line to get things done and
Those who stand on principle. They get things done too, but not as many and not as easily.
Every congressman and every senator, when the first arrive in Washington get The Talk. A senior member of the leadership puts an arm around them (I always imagine LBJ, six foot, four inches, doing this) and explains to them the facts of life. If you wanna get reelected, if you want to move up, if you want nice committee assignments, if you want to be one of the cool kids, you do what you're told, when you're told, you don't rock the boat, and you don't make waves. You go along to get along. If you play the game, you get ahead. You can strike out on your own, but if you do, there's no future in it.
So, Paul Ryan does what he's told. He got the message that "Okay, it's time now." And he comes in and endorses the party's standard bearer. Good boy.

Re: Report: Paul Ryan To Endorse Romney
I do think at this point that it makes no sense for Santorum to continue (Newt's dropped out for all intents and purposes). Romney's been pulled as far right as he's going to be and every dollar he has to spend on the primaries is one less he has for the general. Rick may think he's lining up for 2016 but staying in when it's a foregone conclusion will actually hurt him.
Given how bad things have gone for Obama recently I have to think there is a potential GOP candidate or two who are kicking themsleves for not running this year.

Newt's only worthless to Obama because Santorum's neutered him. If Santorum drops out, the angry ABR money will go to Newt, who will continue his current spending practices of airing negative ads in swing states after the primary is over; I'm guessing that this is essentially for blackmail/ shakedown purposes. We need Rick until May 8th at the earliest. If we win Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Indiana, it's probably safe to drop him, but even then, better to have Santorum win Kentucky and Arkansas.

Re: Report: Paul Ryan To Endorse Romney
Almost forgot: Go Romney/Ryan!
No told you so's from me. The closest I come to that is staying that Romney will be a significantly stronger candidate than many think here because he is conservatism is a package that's not threatening, and very difficult to demonize. And if Mitt Nice wasn't enough, Ann Romney will act as kind of a demonization shield for the ticket--the DEMSM's efforts will wind up hurting Obama.
If everyone was like me, Ryan would be the obvious choice for VP. But that's not true, so the dynamics of region, excitement, and "DC insider" come into play. I suspect Ryan is #1 or #2 on Romney's list. Jim DeMint is the other listee due to his ability to move the ticket's center of gravity towards the South. Christie (coupled with my weight loss program press conference!) is the excitement alternative). Eric Cantor also intrigues me, but less so. Govs. Martinez and Brewer are also up there as wildcards.
I'm sure Mitt Romney has been running all the permutations in his head, and is focus grouping the options as we speak--as he should.
