As reported by BuzzFeed:

Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, the icon of the anti-spending movement in the Republican Party, has communicated to former Senator Rick Santorum that he will endorse Mitt Romney, according to a source familiar with the conversation.

Ryan's staff called Rick Santorum today as a courtesy to announce the news. The announcement from Ryan himself is expected this weekend, most likely during one of the Sunday shows, the source said — and in the run-up to the Republican primary.

I thought he might do it tomorrow morning. I guess Sunday morning makes more sense. We'll have to wait and hear what he says to see if this is an embrace of Romney or, as it was with Rubio, just an embrace of the electoral reality.

Pretty soon comes the time, you either get on the wagon, or get left behind. That's always how it works. They look like they're having fun on the wagon, and at the same time, the crowd left behind starts looking less and less attractive. Better get on the wagon.

And the crowd goes wild. With tranquilizers.

Ryan is too smart, too genuine, and too much of a winner for a Romney Administration not to work hand in hand with him. This is all very good. You watch.

Also, Bush 41 just endorsed him, which I would have thought would be big news, too. It's not like we've got a heck of a lot of other people with a clear understanding of what the job takes; the other Republican with Presidential experience still hasn't spoken.

That, and the second of two Republicans to be governor of Pennsylvania while Santorum was Senator just endorsed Mitt. The people who know the job best, the people who know the budget best, and the people who know Santorum best, all seem to be in clear agreement.

Some months ago, in response to a question, Paul Ryan indicated he could not endorse any candidate until his work with the RNC Presidential Trust was completed.  He had pledged neutrality as part of that effort.  Well, the effort is now complete as announced today by Reince Priebus, so, Ryan is now free to let us know he has preferred Mitt Romney all along.  And the announcement will come just in time for the Wisconsin Primary.  Look for Paul Ryan to be the vice presidential choice once the nomination is in hand.

Both Bush and DeMint had said nice things about Mitt, but neither had formally endorsed until Bush just did. If you want to get a sense of whether it makes a difference, mention the "fact" that DeMint has endorsed Mitt in a post some time. Let me know if people let it slide. ;-)

I'm curious about the Ryan endorsement's impact on Wisconsin; it'll be an interesting test of his ability to swing votes as VP; a very deeply imperfect test, but an interesting one nonetheless. I'm thinking the results in the First District (Ryan's) and the Third will be the ones to follow.

And vice versa. Now add Marco Rubio. What a trifecta!

Well, let's see now...Obama's budget is unanimously rejected by the House of Representatives; Democrat Senators from oil producing states take issue with Obama's claim that "we're drilling everywhere"; Obama's support among younger voters is evaporating; Obama's comments on the Zimmerman/Martin case could cost him Hispanic votes, the Supreme Court looks like it may strike down Obamacare in June; Obama gets caught on an open microphone essentially conspiring and colluding with Medvedev implying that once re-elected there will be little to thwart his appeasement to Russia and Putin to the detriment of Poland and other former Soviet-client states; and Joe ("Dr. Pepper-big effen-deal-you-cannot-go-into-a-7-11-or-a-Dunkin-Donuts-unless-you-have-a-slight-Indian-accent") Biden continues to suffer from hoof-in-mouth.

Meanwhile Romney continues to get endorsements - most recently from Tea Party favorites Rubio and Ryan. All-in-all a pretty good week. Now, I can nestle all snug in my bed while visions of a Romney-Ryan ticket dance in my head.

I don't think DeMint has to, but I do hope that he comes out before the May 8th primaries. With DeMint being active, they wouldn't need to be disasters (Arkansas and Kentucky on the 22nd are probably unwinnable for Mitt, which is why he needs Santorum to stay in the race even if he loses Pennsylvania). Same deadline for Gov. Daniels. Gov. Walker gets to endorse whoever he wants whenever he wants; he's got bigger fish to fry. Palin has until some point in May, but any time before Santorum withdraws is fine. Other than them, Bush 43, and the elusive Hemingway formal endorsement despite the Paul vote, who matters?

I don't think that Giuliani endorses before NY; he can't endorse Santorum, he can't endorse Mitt, and endorsing Newt at this stage would be weird. He could still cause trouble.

Watching the endorsement, I think the kindest words were Barbara Bush's words about Anne. I don't know why those haven't been more widely focused on. She said initially that Anne would be the best First Lady, then corrected that to say that she'd be the second best, after Bush's daughter in law (41 asked if she was including herself and she dismissed him). Mitt then talked for a bit about how big a compliment this was, saying that he thought that Barbara was the most beloved First Lady, and Barbara went back to not including a Laura qualification to her greatest First Lady claim. I think, if publicized, that would influence some women.

She also said that it was the biggest election of her lifetime. They both seemed very genuine and proud of Romney. Video here. Somehow Fox messed up and didn't get the feed until it was mostly over, then stuck with the scene for a long time after they'd stopped speaking to the camera. Also, they confirmed that 43 is still not going to endorse before the convention, by which time it'll hopefully be too late to make a difference.

A bit late. I endorsed him months ago.

This is no great surprise. We are near the end of the road, and Santorum -- for all of his grit and doggedness -- is not going to make it.

I find the Rubio and Ryan endorsements reassuring.

Though your equating 'going on the wagon' with joining the fun seems contrary to common sense, Etty, slide over I'm climbing in. I guess it's appropriate for a Mormon wagon. You won't find me arguing with Ryan, Rubio and James of England.

This is kind of a no-brainer at this point.

I think we're down to Ryan, DeMint, McDonnell, (Eric) Cantor, or Jan Brewer as likely VPs.  My preference is for Ryan.  The guy's just so solid, quick, and decent that it gives me hope for the country.  Let Sen. Rubio become Gov. Rubio, and then President--there's time.

Proper response and proper symbol of the Romney Campaign...golf clap.

After what we've seen of Presidents since Reagan I regard this as a positive, restrained enthusiasm.

Oh I know. I was just teasing. I thought that Romney got good enough play out of Bush's words in December or whenever that was that this week's announcement wasn't as big as it otherwise would have been.

It will be interesting to see, leading up to the election, how Ryan articulates his support of Romney, namely, how Ryan's focus on first principles and limited government mesh with Romney's progressive, technocratic bent.

I imagine there are leftist journalists who can't wait to ask Romney his opinion on what they perceive to be Ryan's most 'extreme' conservative positions, and vice versa.  I still think Rubio will be the VP pick.
