The Tax Foundation just issued its grades for the Republican candidates' tax programs:

Huntsman: B+

Perry: B

Cain: B-

Paul: B-

Gingrich: C+

Bachmann: C

Romney: C-

Santorum: D+

From the Union-Leader:

The Tax Foundation, a Washington-based think tank, said Huntsman’s plan rated a B+ grade for its “wipe the slate clean” approach to tax expenditures, which “knocks out preferential taxation in one fell swoop,” according to the report, which will be released today.
“Gov. Huntsman is running on his consistent, conservative record that took Utah to number one in the nation in job creation. He has put forth the most pro-growth tax plan in the field, and it is based on his experience passing the largest tax cut in Utah history,” campaign spokesman Michael Levoff said when asked about the report card.
Huntsman, who moved his campaign headquarters to New Hampshire, has already been lauded by The Wall Street Journal and several other publications and think tanks for his tax plan.

Here's that Wall Street Journal analysis on Huntsman. And here's the Journal's criticism of Romney, which is worth a re-read.

I'm just trying to remember why we're not supposed to like him. He has a conservative record, conservative plans, executive experience. What's the problem again?

Too snarky for me. I couldn't stand listening to him for potentially 8 years.

So how are you on his policies? Like them? Disagree with them?

I don't know about anyone else, but I want to punch him in the face every time he wrinkles that brow, starts sending semaphore with those eyebrows, and condescends to me. It's not the most cognitive argument against him, but it's a hurdle he can't clear.

Because he looks like the love child of Don Knotts and Mitt Romney.

Ah...Huntsman maybe he is the Dark Horse we need...but then again he was dismissed from the get go as a RINO (and Obama Lacky). Was it not on a Young Guns podcast that all were mentioning his future career writing for the Daily Beast? He also seemed to believe and agree with the majority of climate scientists on AGW theories and seriousness.

As the comments above prove, no one really cares what your policies are you just have to look pretty and feel right. Policies and accomplishments be darned. Not that I care anymore...I've given up on this race...I'm writing Christie down on my ballot.

Because he spent money like a fiend in Utah, he served for the current administration in China (don't give me the malarky that he was just being patriotic), you don't serve in an administration as ambassador to CHINA, unless there is some political, philosophical, and cultural overlap with said administration; and finally his reduction of all geo-political questions to economic answers - the same mistake that Cain made and made me hesitant to support him before his - um - other problems surfaced.

Finally, see above, this man is not going to best Obama in the general election, although in terms of personality they have much in common, from my chair at least.

Oh, and if you are going to claim fluency and then speak Chinese on a televised interview, if you are 1. as rusty or 2. as mediocre as people who are fluent have noted, don't call yourself fluent, because you assume the rest of us rubes are too dumb to find out, or know.

One more thing, I hate his daughters' Youtube posts, anything else...

Well, he has one thing going for him.  He's not Romney.  Once the photos of Ron Paul in bed with a harp seal come to light, you can expect Huntsman to make his run.

He supported cap and trade. He's an AGW kook. He increased the Utah budget from 16.7 billion to 22.8 billion.

He's not Calvin Coolidge.

His campaign manager has said that Republicans are nutty. Why vote for a man that despises you?

I don't get it either, Mollie.  As far as I can tell, his most serious substantive fault is the AGW thing, and it's not like he's the only one who's fallen to the temptation to pander on this issue.

I don't see much video of the candidates, so I may just be missing whatever mannerisms are engendering such a visceral dislike from many of the Ricochetoisie.  The important question to me is whether Joe or Jane Independent Voter has the same reaction.

On a scale of how much of a team player, party supporting candidate they are (focusing on performance outside debates), I'd rank the candidates Mitt, Perry, Bachmann, Newt, Santorum,,,,, Paul,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Huntsman. The last time we had a GOP president who despised his party, the Dems got to keep the House for 40 years until Clinton performed a milder version of the same service for the other party.

I'd be very surprised if they did. Like Ike (although for different reasons), a Huntsman nomination would be likely to be very popular, probably for two terms. Two lousy terms for America and for the party (although better for America than another for Obama).

Huntsman lacks the gravitas of some of the other candidates because he was not a sitting governor and Utah is a special case in governance (kind of like Jessie Ventura did not make a huge hash of Minnesota, so it must not be that hard.).  Also Huntsman like Santorum brought absolutely no political momentum with him when he announced (true of Gingrich also I'll admit).

Now don't be surprised that you like his policies, when you have been subjected to 3 years of Obamanomics.  You are a very thirsty voter at this point and any drink sounds delicious.

BTW I admire the "aw shucks" manner in which you have paraded each candidate out for comment in the last week or so (Has Sanctorum gotten his chance?).  Is there some sort of meta analysis that is forthcoming that will demonstate how confused we are in our opinions?
