Today marks the end of my week as a guest contributor here on Ricochet, an experience I have enjoyed very much.  It’s only appropriate that in my final post I note tomorrow’s anniversary of 9/11, but anything I might write about it today will surely pale when compared to a piece I wrote for NRO back in 2004, on the third anniversary of the attacks.  In it, I described the experiences of the Sullivan family, who lost their son and brother Patrick that day.

For last year’s anniversary, I brought NRO readers up to date with this column on how the Sullivan family has fared in the years since Patrick was killed.  I hope Ricochet readers will take the time to read these two pieces and try to place themselves in the shoes of those whose loved ones were so horrifically taken from them ten years ago.

My thanks to Rob Long and everyone in the Ricochet community for allowing me to join the conversation this week.

Thanks for the links, and moreover, thanks for the wonderful writing.  What a great story, and how wonderful that this family is able to remember Patrick as the exceptional man that he was.  Thanks for making this story bring the attacks down to an understandable, personal scale--it makes the pain and horror more real and less abstract.  Our prayers are with the Sullivans, with the larger Cantor Fitzgerald family, and with all families who properly mark tomorrow with remembrance and grief.

It been an honor to have you here, sir. And thank you again for reminder on what we've lost, and why we fight. We fight for what we love.

Many thanks for your time with us this week.  I just read your two columns on the Sullivan family and was so touched by their personal recollections and your telling of their story.  Watched President Bush speak at Shanksville this morning.  His sincerity shined through as he honored those heroes. Seeing him there with the flowers in the field behind him reminded me of times past.  My uncle’s (deceased) dairy farm was not very far from that spot, and as youngsters, my cousins and I would often ride the horses to Friedens for sodas and candy.  There in the tiny town of Friedens today is the Flight 93 Memorial Chapel.
