Qaddafi Sculpture

When President Reagan bombed Libya in response to the Gulf of Sidra incident and the terrorist attack at a disco, I recall former President Carter warning that because our bombs killed Qaddafi's daughter, we could expect that Qaddifi would spend his life exacting revenge.

Of course Carter was being Carter, and his point was to be critical of the bombing in the first place.  Since even a broken clock is right twice a day, Carter wasn't wrong about Qadaffi reacting with the coward's vengeance of terrorism.  See, for example, the attacks on Pan Am flight 73 in Pakistan and Pan Am flight 103 in Scotland.

In an act of defiance, Qaddafi left the building where his daughter was killed in rubble, and had made the sculpture of a golden hand crushing an American fighter jet you see in this photo.

That building and the sculpture were in the news today, as Qaddafi spoke to his people from there.

The first big news is that you need to stop reading this and go fill the gas tank in your car, because Qadaffi declared "force majeure" on all Libya's petroleum contracts, which means if he owes money he's not paying, and if he owes oil, he's not delivering.

Even crazier than that, Qaddafi told the people of Libya who "love him" to go out and attack the protesters "in their lair."

Can you imagine?  How awful do you have to be to incite people out of their homes and into the street to attack other people in your own country?

Who will cry (other than the UN, who cried in 1986 when we bombed Libya) if we finally take Qaddafi out of the picture?

Can't he stay just a little longer?  My silver and oil investments are zooming.

Plus, I'll miss his hats.

I suspect something similar would be happening in Iraq if we hadn't removed Saddam from power.  Given that he had gassed Kurds and slaughtered Marsh Arabs I think it's a pretty safe bet he wouldn't have had any qualms about using artillery and aircraft on demonstrators like Qaddafi is doing.

Another benefit of the Iraq war?  It probably is for the Iraqi people...

VDH stated he talked to a Libyan, who said that the "daughter" was adopted by MQ after she died.  Very opportune!

Well, I read this recently and wonder at the extent of the response he may get.

I just watched MQ's "address" to his fellow Libyans. How on earth can a crackpot like that manage to hold a nation captive for as long as he has? The mind boggles.

After he's gone, I hope the Castro boys are next to get theirs.
