Peter's item on what Reagan was really like should be at the top of a very large and growing pile of Reagan tributes that are deservedly coming out this week.  My own humble contibutions to the Reagan celebration include this piece in the Forward on how Reagan made the GOP into a pro-Israel party, and one of the cover pieces in National Review (here's the cover; the piece remains behind the firewall) on Reagan's intellectual legacy.  The common thread in the two articles is the way in which Reagan tried to find unifying themes that could bring the GOP together, something the 2012 Republican presidential candidates should be thinking about as they prepare their respective campaigns.

Something great conservative leaders like Reagan, Churchill and Thatcher have in common is that their emphasis on moral arguments.

Most voters are not studied economists, historians or diplomats. But we are human beings concerned with justice and the well-being of our neighbors. Great leaders emphasize common values over expertise and numbers. They relate specific strategies back to fundamentals, grand goals, honor and a sense of duty.

Reagan tied everything together into a comprehensive vision of responsibility and prosperity. I agree, that's what the GOP must do now.
