We're back from the mountains where we Robinsons spent the better part of four days fishing. (And when the kids weren't fishing, their father was spending money on lines, tackle, lures and guidebooks.) Below, a photo of our single success. Ten seconds after one boy raised his iPhone to take this picture, the other son released this teensy excuse for a trout back into the stream. But for a moment--a moment!--one of us had actually caught a fish.

You're too honest to be a genuine fisherman Peter. You could have posted a picture of a big fish you never caught and taken credit for it.

That earlier stream you were on looked like the upper little Truckee. These are my fishing grounds. Using worms for trout is a touch cruel as they swallow a barbed hook and removal often leads to fish death. Not all species swallow bait deep so this should not apply beyond trout. I however have been that cruel fisherman at many times in my life and had my kids catch trout with powerbait etc for the thrill of nature so I shant cast any stones. I do however do it differently these days unless I am keeping the fish for consumption.
What I do cast are stone flies though ( golden stones, yellow stones, black stoneflies) and always with pinched barbs that never kill fish.
The first step to teaching children to respect nature is having them fall in love with nature and it's wonders that God has provided for us. It would appear your kids are on the way and at least one is now a mighty hunter.
A guide in the future will reap rewards beyond their wildest dreams.

Congratulations, Peter. I love to fish, although I don't get to very often, and have spent many hours with my kids watching them cast and cast without reeling in a thing. Glad you had some good fortune on your last day.

Today a minnow, tomorrow a few bass, then big game fishing in the "Stream" followed by long nights in bars in Key West, the Bahamas and Havana, full face beards and bull fighting. Are you sure you want your kids going down this path Peter? They may end up as writers.

Maybe those greenies are right about you killing all the fish? I have just spent the week fishing in Georgian Bay for bass and pike, the occasional pickeral. There is a skill to it. My fish would match your efforts but the keen fisher men in the family are up at dawn and catch impressive fish, ready for breakfast. If you are bringing your sons to Canada for a fishing trip, you want Mr. Indaba for your guide.

For the record, this little trout was hooked very lightly in the hard, outer part of its lip (if fish have lips). Not having swallowed the bait, the fish was entirely unharmed. I almost heard it laughing at us as it swam happily off.

I assumed that since if it had been gut hooked with a barb your kids would have dealt with the trauma of attempting to remove it and the fishes stomach would have come along for the ride. Your post would have had a touch different flavor.
I have cleaned and eaten such dinky little fish in the distant past to assuage the tears of a child who watched me dealing the death blow to such hooked trout. Fillets the size of one sashimi bite can be tough pan fry.
You did not say if I was correct on the stream you posted earlier. They can all look similar but I think I know that stretch on Hwy 89.

I'm not sure they all have names, to be honest, but we were fishing creeks that run down along Kaiser Pass Road and feed into Huntington Lake. Paradise.

Hey, Peter, we're just back from a fishing trip as well -- the Georgian Bay in Ontario.
Zero success for 6 days going for large pike and muskie (but got a 51 incher a couple yrs back) so lost all shame on the last day and downsized to tiny spoons to go for smaller pike. Got 8, a couple not much larger than your trophy, I'm afraid -- and all of whom my daughter sweetly named before we released them.
Nice to forget about work and politics for a time.

A couple smallmouth by accident -- always fun. And yes, great weather -- just one rainy day, but after baking a few days it felt kinda good. And the muskie was loads of fun, about a hundred thousand casts in the making! (though I'm sure not a record)
Since you know the area: We bought an island in the Pointe au Baril area (30 mi north of Parry Sound) about ten years ago. Not quite big enough to build on (and hence it was affordable), so we've turned it into the world's most fantastic campsite. Heaven on earth, really. Miss it already.
Where abouts were you?

Peter, take the boys salmon and steelhead fishing in the NorthWest. Either river fish or a days charter with a good guide in a small group.
Good sized fish and an experience to remember.
For really big trout go to Lake Chelan.
Having long grow tired of State Catch and Release programs, be mindfull of where you drop a line.
