Re: Enough Already, Buck Up
Peggy Noonan has nothing on Thomas Sowell, with whom I'll be recording an episode of Uncommon Knowledge this very afternoon. From Dr. Sowell's latest book, Dismantling America:
The collapse of a civilization is not just the replacement of rulers or institutions with new rulers and new institutions. It is the destruction of a whole way of life and the painful, and sometimes pathetic, attempts to begin rebuilding amid the ruins.
Is that where America is headed? I believe it is.
I'll be asking Dr. Sowell whether anything--the tea party movement, the declining crime rates in big cities, the polls showing that the whole sorry Obama experiment is likely to be repudiated in November, anything--offers him a glimmer or two of hope.
Will report.

Re: Re: Enough Already, Buck Up
I will agree that Europe is rapidly approaching the point of civilizational collapse. The combination of demographic collapse and a populace seduced by bread and circuses seems to indicate the Europeans have reached a point of no return. I think it's fair to put the blame on socialism.
I'm not so sure America stands on the same precipice, not yet anyway. We are becoming more decadent, but I think the combination of abundant natural resources and the native talent of our people counts for much. The third element, our personal liberty, is a necessary component in the recipe for revival. This is why a conservative victory in the culture was is essential.

I can't wait! Can y'all release the piece all on one day so I don't have to wait for each separate segment to come out!?
Work is hopelessly boring right now.....

Re: Re: Enough Already, Buck Up
The problems are real. That doesn't mean that we will not come up with solutions. I don't think we are really trying hard yet. The reason why it is darkest before the dawn is that it is only the really bad stuff that motivates us into looking hard for new good stuff.
I see it as possible that we will be heading into our greatest period of economic growth ten years from today. Stranger things have happened. And there have been dark times before from which we have recovered.
In any event, giving up serves no useful purpose whatsoever. It's not even fun. Even fighting for a hopeless cause (and I do not see this one as being even close to hopeless) is fun.

Peter: Just how often does Dr. Sowell publish each new book? My budget can't handle two per year--and they're all so good.

I am looking forward to you interview with Dr. Sowell. I will catching up on this weeks a little later. I like to wait and watch all five episodes at once.

Re: Re: Enough Already, Buck Up
You should ask him this question, because it hasn't been answered:
What happens if the U.S. goes "bankrupt\"?
Because at this point, I don't think people care. If a person goes bankrupt, then they still exist. So people think, "Well, if the Government goes 'bankrupt,' it's not going anywhere..."
I think the ramifications and the terminology (bankrupt ain't quite right) need to be elucidated.
