Delingpole Bandstand

This is something of a departure for us. Well, not something of one -- it's a total departure, but we think you'll love it.  James and British DJ Eddie Temple Morris play and discuss some of their favorite tracks of 2011. Delingpole as Ricochet's Dick Clark? Groovy, man.

Thanks,  EJ

Grantman: You're right, I apologize and may I just say - it was TOTALLY Eddy's fault. He's the studio expert. He should have known...

Anyway, we'll make sure it doesn't happen again. And you're not alone: everyone finds this kind of thing annoying and rightly so.

I thought the music was rubbish, and your mate Eddie spoke bollocks, but other than that I enjoyed it from start to finish.

All modern art forms remind me of this bit from White Christmas. But, I'm a grumpy old man before my time and a hater of all things pop culture.

Thanks for posting the music.  Great Britain has been the incubator of so much great stuff generation to generation.  Recently, though it seems like ancient times now, the Killers left the US to refine their sound and find an audience in the UK.  They pulled their own Hendrix and came home heroes.  To hear that new forms like Dubstep are really homages to something originally American is as flattering as hearing that the Stones and the Yardbirds were playing their own forms of the American Blues.  That's not to say that I dug it that much.  I enjoyed the enthusiasm with which it was discussed immensely.  more so I fear than the actual tune.  I promised myself, though, that I would be one of those guys getting older that appreciated new forms as they bubbled up, rather than deride them because they didn't match my taste.  I haven't looked at the playlist, or completed the listen due to the volume issues, but I really like that first track.  Perhaps we can get more from James as an ambassador to the smoother tastes across the pond.  All in all, I am thrilled the podcast was done.  Thanks!

Percival: James, your guilty pleasure wasn't all that bad.  Bear in mind, however, that this comes from someone whose own guilty musical pleasures include a couple of songs from a group called the Monkees.

Don't forget Valleri and Daydream Believer.

One point Eddie made on the podcast is that producers seldom get the credit they deserve.  Sure, the Monkees were just actors hired to play a band, but they had people like Neil Diamond writing songs for them behind the scenes.

First off... James, by all means, make this a regular feature.

Second, your buddy's wrong, the Sensual World was Kate's best record. You know it's good when it can attract a young metalhead, such as I was.

Oh.  I thought flownover was casting the first Stepping Stone.

I thoroughly enjoyed the podcast--keep 'em coming.  Although my musical tastes are closer to James's, I loved the interplay between James and Eddie, and I don't mind being challenged by music that is outside my usual comfort zone.  "Superbad" was amusing and fun.  I could actually imagine listening to it again.  As for Ego Troopers--like Jackson Pollock's work, I just don't get it, I'm afraid.

This was not the coolest podcast ever.  In America, we like Rock and Roll.

Also, Intellectual Property is to be treasured and the Rolling Stones we're right to reclaim their publishing rights.  Sampling is lazy and uncreative.

James, loved the podcast - when I had a chance to stop the car I downloaded Skrillex, played it for my wife when I got home and she downloaded it.

Don't feel too badly about your picks - loved the Kate Bush one, definitely bears additional plays.  Eddies 2 other picks were, well...  Let's move on...

Anyway, I've long thought that Ricochet could use a separate music podcast.  Maybe something the editors could do on a rotation basis?  Definitely would like to hear you and Eddie go through another list of good modern stuff.

Would also love to see a podcast of picks of your favorite older stuff.

Guilty pleasures of mine?  That I'll admit to in public?  Weird Al and Annie Lennox (Eurythmics days in particular).

James... I knew you were marvelous even before you were cool here on Ricochet.  My son and I enjoyed "Coward on the Beach," and I've followed your attacks against warmists for some time on the Telegraph.
I do have to gently chide however.  The song you featured by "The Pierces" named "Glorious" I found to be utterly infectious.  Can't buy it in the U.S. yet because those Alabama girls haven't a label here yet.  Guess it will be released here 27 March 2012.  Anyway, you're fantastic, and a huge addition to the Ricochet talent bench.
For those interested, a video of the tune I'm so enamored of is here:

Great podcast! Surprised myself by enjoying everything. I am waiting for a chance to casually refer to dubstep in front of my teenagers.

Two things I love about this podcast.  First, it makes me think of being in high school around 1980 (a little before and after) when there was all this great British music around; and FM radio in NYC mattered.

The other things is how the long, rambling interesting conversation on radio still lives. I remember this mostly from listening to domestic UK am and lw radio while living in France.

Just great and reassuring.

I never post or comment on Ricochet, but I must for this one!  I finally got around to listening to this curious podcast, and I had a smile on my face for the entire show.  James Delingpole - I am a fan of your written work, and I obviously share your musical tastes; the songs you chose were not boring, they were great.  Your friends' tunes were interesting and his words were enlightening, but I was left wanting by the tracks themselves..... I guess I'll never be a club music fan. The final track by Skrillex (?) showed promise, so I'll keep an open mind.

Awesome work, please do it again!!!

I was flying back to Pittsburgh with my 20 yo son last week.  Had listened to the podcast and got a kick out of the Dubstep conversation and actually liked the Flux Pavilion cut.

During our conversation I dropped the Dubstep on him, asked if he liked it and if he had ever heard of Flux Pavilion.  His reaction was hilarious...rolled his eyes and said 2012 really would be the end of the world if his old man was now into Dubstep.
