Radio Free Delingpole #11: Prophet Without Honor
James Delingpole, America's most beloved podcaster, returns with another view from across the pond. This week, new minted Sunday Sun political columnist Toby Young takes the guest chair and vent on the Cameron visit, the (alleged) coming Mitt-copolypse, Delingpole goes Down Under, Toby's dangerous trip to Wales, and James vs. the BBC.

Our thanks to EJHill for the biblical recreation.

Thanks for the link to Toby Young - I have missed his writing since he left the Telegraph blogs.

This is fine listening. Yes. We do like it when you ramble.
Re: Radio Free Delingpole #11: Prophet Without Honor
Once again, I prostrate myself before the mighty genius of EJ Hill.
And thanks, Yeah...ok, for the comment. I think you're right. Listening to the experts - Robinson/Lileks/Long, say - I realize that what really matters is the snappiness and unpredictability and flights of fancy. What one doesn't really want is just people sounding off about politics. I think I can promise that these podcasts will get better and better with more practice. But boy am I blessed with my guests: Toby Young, Tim Stanley, Douglas Murray, Paul Rahe...

Re: Radio Free Delingpole #11: Prophet Without Honor
James, there are still some of us over here in America that appreciate the special relationship...unless you stop exporting Downton Abbey. Then all bets are off.

James, we love it when you babble. You're the only reason I still subscribe to Ricochet.
And thank you for news of the Berk-cow -- obviously the Essex girl of British politics. We haven't had anything that much fun in Canada since a millionaire novice MP dropped her boyfriend, the Minister of Defence, for a hockey player and crossed the floor of the House.
Of course, there was the former Minister of Foreign Affairs who forgot briefing papers at his girlfriend's, a rather bosom-y cougar with links to the Hell's Angels...

Re: Radio Free Delingpole #11: Prophet Without Honor
James, you and Toby spent a fair while bemoaning the asymmetry of the special relationship, going so far as to suggest that people in the US are unaware of this relationship. Humorous as I found your banter, I take exception.
Over the years, I’ve experienced the special relationship first hand. In official dealings between government officials (at low levels), there’s definitely a connection with the UK that exists with no other nation. Whether it’s the MoD, MI5, or MI6, there's a remarkable amount of cooperation and trust. I’ve always felt most welcome in your country in a way that I've not experienced elsewhere. Undoubtedly the common language and culture are a big part of this. Whatever the cause, the feeling is mutual.
Furthermore, there are many more Anglophiles than, say, Francophiles. Maybe France is a bad example, but you know what I mean. Witness the popularity of Downton Abbey and the American fascination with the Royals.
I'll close by remarking that I've spent few evenings as enjoyably as when I was invited for a game of skittles at a pub in Portsmouth by UK colleagues. Good beer and good cheer all round.

Re: Radio Free Delingpole #11: Prophet Without Honor
During my 28 years of reserve and active service in the U.S. Navy, I've found the relationship to be very close. My deployments have taken me to London a number of times, sometimes for extended periods, and I've worked with the Brits in Europe (Italy & Germany), the Middle East (Bahrain), and Southwest Asia (Afghanistan). Perhaps my experience is not the experience of the typical Yank, but, over the years, I've found Her Majesty's subjects, especially her Royal Navy, to be very generous and hospitable to their American cousins. The last time I enjoyed this hospitality was in Afghanistan on 21 October 2008. During that evening, I attended, along with two other Americans (one Navy, one Army) the RN's Battle of Trafalgar Dinner at ISAF HQ in Kabul. Maybe I'm overstating it, but my guess is you will find those with overseas military experience will be those who are most aware of the kinship and who feel it most acutely.
I see from a Google search that The Three Tuns located on Portman Mews South is still open. It's been over twenty years since I frequented the place. I need a pint.

EJ Hill -
Thank you for NOT showing Toby Young in drag. That brief part of the conversation was funny, but not something I wanted to see.

You guys don't get American electoral politics. You have this in common with other Europeans. (We don't understand parliamentary/coalition politics too well, either). Many of us have known since 2007 that Romney is the best candidate in the current field-- if we want to win an election-- and have worked constantly on his behalf. There are better GOP candidates (as you seem to believe)-- if we want to lose again.
