embargo

This is the first thing I've seen in a long time that gives me serious reason to believe that someone gets it--we control the budget or we become a banana republic.

Finally, we're talking seriously. Finally.

Americans face a monumental choice about the future of their country.

This budget resolution reflects that choice. It disavows the relentless government spending, taxing, and borrowing that are leading America, right at this moment, toward a debt-fueled economic crisis and the demise of America’s exceptional promise.

To my astonishment, the numbers that go with these usually-empty words are serious numbers. Adult numbers, not fantasy-world numbers.

This is making me feel hopeful for the first time in a long time. I know I've been telling everyone not to give up hope, but the truth is I was mostly telling myself. This is making me actually feel it.

I dunno, Claire, the last time you were hopeful, the Muslim Brotherhood found itself in a position to take over Egypt.  Oh, you say that couldn't possibly happen here, but I'm not shaving for a while, just in case.

Now, if only this budget could make it through the Senate and get a Presidential signature unscathed...

What's "grown-up" about proposing a budget that you know the Senate won't accept?

Paul Ryan can defeat Obama.  In fact, barring some unforeseen circumstance or personal scandal, it is difficult for me to see how Ryan could lose to Obama.  When was the last time we had a truly Madisonian wonk in the public spotlight?  And unlike dear old James, Ryan can actually give a speech.

I know he has a young family and doesn't feel its his time to run, but the guy also understands the stakes as well as anyone.  By the end of the year, if our field remains so pathetic that the likes of Donald Trump are still contending (Donald Trump?!? WTF?? How the did it even come to this???) I hope that Ryan will reconsider for the sake of the country.

Grown-ups start a negotiation with everything they want. Granted, it won't survive intact but why not remind the voters that Ryan et al. treat them as adults. One need only read the Pelosi response to see the contrast.

We'd rather go in proposing everything and getting part of it, than proposing nothing, and getting all of it.
