RNC Chairman Reince Priebus
The RNC numbers are in and as most Committee watchers expected, Reince Priebus of Wisconsin is the new RNC Chairman. Priebus did an exceptional job as Wisconsin GOP Chairman last year and I think the RNC will be in good hands. He ran a near perfect RNC race. While Priebus is not a natural communications star, he is the kind of steady nuts and bolts guy the committee badly needs. That said, the spell-checking software on my computer wishes he would change his name to "Jack Reagan" or "Joe Liberty."
It was an interesting if not unusual RNC election. I predicted a 60% chance of Priebus a few days ago, followed by a 35% chance of Anuzis and a 10% chance of Maria Cino. I was wrong twice; those numbers add up to 105%, far more likely in a Chicago Mayoral election or a Long Island GOP county convention than at the RNC. I also thought Saul would do better in the middle ballots, which did not happen. Instead he declined. The final vote did have those three candidates in about that order and at about that vote. I'll consider my crystal ball cracked but more or less intact.
As I've been typing this I got a call from a pal of mine who ran himself for RNC Chairman a few years ago. We had a good laugh about the "mirage" factor, whereby the lagging candidates always wait way too long to accept reality, drop out and make an alliance. If Cino, Wagner and Anuzis had all gone into a room after Steele dropped out, with only one coming out, this might have been a more interesting contest. Still, the Reince Priebus machine would have been hard to beat. Which tells me the new Chairman of the RNC knows his business.

Here's looking forward to a more mechanically sound RNC.

Here are the two-word anagrams of Reince Priebus -- none stands out as a great substitute moniker, though:

Re: RNC Chairman Reince Priebus
I sense you'd make a fine Diplomacy player, sir. Except that everyone else would gang up on you at the beginning to prevent the breakthrough. So maybe a fine Diplomacy advisor.
I'm mainly concerned that Reince Priebus will not sponsor youth outings to lesbian bondage theme clubs, thus robbing me of freebies and preventing my effort to drive Ricochet traffic by saying lesbian as often as plausible.
Is there a Muppet Reince Priebus?
Re: RNC Chairman Reince Priebus
CJRum,
Huh? What is your point? You don't like Priebus? Why?
Re: RNC Chairman Reince Priebus
CJRun,
Apologies if I redacted your comment out of misunderstanding. But just a reminder that we like to avoid rudeness in dialogue with one another.

Re: RNC Chairman Reince Priebus
Not sure why that CJ comment got redacted. As I recall it said "I don't like what you say, but you're good at what you do." Paraphrasing. But surely Mike's heard worse criticism on these pages.
Re: RNC Chairman Reince Priebus
Mike,
A rather elementary question(s) I hope you can answer for me:
What exactly is the RNC Chair supposed to do? Raise money? Head up electoral strategy? Be a spokesperson for Republican ideals? And is it better for the chairman to be more of an anonymous figure, or is it beneficial for him to insert himself into political dialogue?
Re: RNC Chairman Reince Priebus
Job one is to run the mechanical side of the GOP national apparat, which is very important. Funding to state parties, GOTV, research, etc. Sort of like holding the key Ford Motor Company checking account vis a vis Ford's role in the auto business. Good communicator type RNC chairs are great, but key is nuts and bolts know how and the diplomatic skill to work well with the state parties and the party leadership on the Hill and in the State Houses. Quiet technician is fine.

Is "Nice Prius Beer" also a true anagram?
How about "I Sincere Repub"?
"I Rinse Beer Cup"?
"Nicer Repubsie"? (my second-favorite)
Or (my favorite) "Prince Beerius"?
(Beer keeps popping into my head because of the Wisconsin connection.)
Incidentally, how do you pronounce Reince Priebus?

Hey, Mike...
Help me out here, if you would. What are the two or three ways we'll be able to tell if Reince Preibus is doing a good job, in the next six months or so? What should we be looking for?
Aside, I guess, from a name change?

Re: RNC Chairman Reince Priebus
Rence Preebus, is how everyone will say it. Sort of like the British say vallay as vallett.
What should we be looking for, Rob? The dog that didn't bark in the night, my dear Watson. And buckets of ducats.

This RNC process sure felt like the worst high school student council meeting ever. I sure hope Ricochet makes the year book.

Re: RNC Chairman Reince Priebus
Really, Ken, this election saw the RNC as an irrelevance. NRO has it as their "hot blog", but dear sweet Jesus, my eyes glaze over. Perhaps Rence Preebus can make it relevant again through basic competence.
Though I will miss the lesbian bondage theme clubs.
More intrigued to learn that Mike handicaps political horse races like I do actual horse races. Assigning each a chance to win and then checking the odds board til five minutes before post to ascertain the mathematically correct bet.

The most interesting quote of the day on this front may have come from Rhode Island RNC member Joseph Trillo (these are the people who gave us Lincoln Chafee, remember), a Steele supporter who reportedly said "What corporation changes the head when you've just had the biggest win? It's insane."
To which five words are sufficient response: correlation does not prove causation.

Is he honestly supportive of , grudgingly accepting of, or hostile towards the Tea Party movement?

Re: RNC Chairman Reince Priebus
Sorry for the tone, Mike. It was just a reference to the heat you took over the Delaware race, followed by the acknowledgement that you had been right.
I did follow that with the "mechanically sound" comment, which really should be the issue.

Re: RNC Chairman Reince Priebus
Mike is tough. He sat through the Real Time show with Bill Maher with nary a push back. They were quite insulting. Not to Mike personally but to his cause. The best comeback he had was....That is just a cartoon...
Please Diane, stop protecting Mike Murphy. If he can go on that squalid, brain-dead show and sit through Maher's vitriol, he can take a little ribbing from his own side.

Re: RNC Chairman Reince Priebus
Remember, these are the guys that voted to make Nancy Pelosi head of the party after the worst defeat in seventy years. Hmm, which party is more forward-looking?
