I'm going to have some coffee and some breakfast here, then I'll put up the resolution. Remember, here's what's going to happen:

Step 1: We're going to put up the proposition. Then you'll cast your initial vote by means of the "like" button. There will be three comments under the proposition, one that says, "In favor," one that says, "Against," one that says "Undecided." Any questions about that?

Step 2: We'll have a preliminary open discussion, much like our usual discussions, in the comment thread--that lasts until tomorrow.

At this point, an ordinary Ricochet thread just fades away. Not this one!

Step 3: TomorrowWe'll establish two threads, one for those for the motion, one for those against it. These threads will be highly moderated. We'll be asking you to substantiate factual claims and tighten up your arguments. We'll be deleting anything off-topic.

Step 4: The editors will prepare summaries of the arguments and post them.

After this, all who voted initially may vote again. A winner will be declared, and a major issue of our time will be resolved, once and for all, for all posterity. (We'll have to figure out what to do when Sweden calls: We can't all go to the Nobel ceremony, someone has to stay here and watch Ricochet. I point out--not that I mind this at all, I just point it out--that I was here over Christmas, so I should definitely get to go.)

The link to the debate will stay at the top of the page throughout, and will become a permanent part of the Annals of Ricochet--the resolved Ricochet position.

One day for each step.

Did everyone have a nice Christmas? I hope so. I'd ask whether Santa brought you what you wanted, but Christmas is over, and I cannot feign polite interest in Santa anymore. That's done for another year. Let's make a deal: You don't talk Santa, I don't talk stir-fried tofu. Fair enough?

I hope your breakfast isn't stir-fried tofu.  Merry debate day.

So the winners will be determined by majority vote? I'm very interested, but I doubt that if the winners are determined by majority vote that the arguments will matter much.

The reason for voting both before and after is to show how much peoples' minds were changed by the arguments.

Have fun.  I'm out.  Starting to sound too much like homework.

And forgive me, Claire, but I write this with my three-year-old granddaughter on my lap in Eagle River, Alaska, where it is still Christmas day.  She's still awake because she wants to talk about how much she loves Santa...Santa...Santa...

Sorry, Claire. The last time I let someone pick up my Nobel for me, I never saw them again. Let's make it a Ricochet cruise.

Claire, you neglected to credit Trace with the topic suggestion.

Oh, you're right, I did! I'll fix that.
