From today's New York Times story on Harvard student Bo Guagua, son of the disgraced Chinese Communist party boss Bo Xilai:
In interviews, many of his friends rejected the notion that he was a playboy or a poor student.... “His concern for China and its people is deep-rooted and real,” said one friend in China who spends time with him during his frequent visits home. “He’s a big thinker. When he gets drunk, he talks about important things.”

When I was in college I'm pretty sure all my drunk conversations were about "important things". Now I get drunk with my friends and all we talk about is competition and bankruptcy law. Not sure the change is for the better.

Not surprised at all that a Communist Party leader's kid got into Harvard. A friend who travels in influential circles in the middle east reports that almost all of the ruling elite there got their education at prominent US colleges. I bet the Ivies educate more of America's future foreign enemies than its own future soldiers.
Then again, maybe this is why colleges are so useless these days - it's all been an intricate, decades-long covert op to make sure our enemies get as poorly educated as possible!

Having been taught by my parents a few things about moderation and drinking, I hope that he learned something from his parents , especially his mother, about moderate drinking.

A friend of my brother's went to Eton because his father, a communist general, had been tasked with shutting down an excellent school that styled itself "the Eton of China". Since he believed strongly in the excellence of the institution he murderously destroyed, he sent his son to what he hoped would be something similar. The kid eventually gave up a lot of his studies due to an obsession with punk rock. I'm ashamed to say that I take a little pleasure from thoughts of what I understand to be his father's shame at this.

Ha, got this guy beat. Not only did I discuss Really Important Things (very loudly no doubt) when I got drunk in college, but I also made really cool shots in bar pool! And I didn't even need to pay for a Harvard education - SUNY was sufficient.

Yes, and the beauty of it all is that even if these people come with no strong opinions about America our professors do everything they can to change that and to educate them as to how bad America really is. Who would know better than an American professor?
