- It’s been taken 5 times: 1979, 1987, 1995, 1999 and 2007.
- Only one winner went on to become President: George W. Bush.
- Two losers of the poll went on to become President: Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush.
- 2 of the 5 times the winner did not win the Iowa Caucus.
- Twice the winner of the Straw Poll, The Iowa Caucus and the Presidency were 3 different people.
- Only one person won the Straw Poll, the Iowa Caucus and the Presidency: George W. Bush.
Conclusion: The best chance of a meaningful win in Iowa is to be George W. Bush.

I'm "liveblogging" it on twitter @TheAmishDude and using the hashtag #AmishDudeStraw.
I posted some pics and a video of McCotter jamming. Unfortunately, I'm using an iphone and nothing sophisticated.

Brilliant analysis!
Re: Quick Historical Stats on the Ames Straw Poll
I hope it is slightly better than those in media who believe there is actually something worth analyzing in this poll!

Iowa is a strange state to start a Republican race in. Since the Reagan landslide in 1984, Iowa only went Republican once in the following 6 elections (Bush in 2004). One would think a swing state or a solidly Republican state would be a better place to kick things off.
At any rate, Iowa has been a somewhat better indicator on the Democratic side anyway, with Carter, Kerry and Obama winning there, as well as Gore in 2000.
