Say you're a conservative Republican sitting on the Senate Armed Services Committee who is concerned about Chuck Hagel being the next SecDef. What would you ask during his confirmation hearing tomorrow?

Do you believe that it's in the interests of the United States to allow Iran to acquire nuclear weapons?  If you do, please explain why and if you don't, please explain how you propose to stop this happening.

(I'm ruling out the possibility of a "what does it matter" answer, because I think that it would be both inadmissible and inconceivable).

In a perfect world the floor would simply be given to George Will:

  • Did you refuse to sign a 2006 letter urging the European Union to declare Hezbollah a terrorist organization because you consider that designation inaccurate? From your 2009 endorsement of U.S. negotiations with Hamas, can we conclude that you oppose the policy of not negotiating with terrorists?
  • Congress’s power to declare war has atrophied since it was last exercised (against Bulgaria, Romania and Hungary on June 5, 1942). Should Congress authorize America’s wars?
  • Speaking of the imperial presidency, do you believe that the use of drones to target specific individuals means presidents have an unreviewable power to kill whomever they define as enemies? Do you favor “signature strikes,” wherein drones attack not identifiable individuals but groups of young males whose characteristics match the “signature” of terrorists?

Three multiple choice questions:

1.  How naive are you about Iran?

    a.   Stupidly naive.

    b.  Insanely naive.

    c.  I love Cyrus the Great.

2.  How much do you love Israel?

   a.   I love Israel, but I love the freedom-fighters of Hezbollah even more.

   b.   I love Israel, but I hate the internatonal Jewish conspiracy.

   c.   I hate both Israel and that Bibi guy.

3.   If Israel were attacked by any of its Arab neighbors or those freedom-loving Hezbollah guys, what would you do?

   a.   Call upon the French to send in peace-keepers.

   b.   Ask the UN Human Rights Council to investigate the matter.

   c.   Immediately issue a press release reaffirming American neutrality, then go play golf with the president.

Senator John Cornyn has an excellent article today at NRO nicely summarizing Hagel's repeatedly stupid positions on Iran.

Past presidents have always chosen civilians as Secretary of Defence; you will be the first who has served in the armed forces.  Could this in any way compromise the principle of civilian control of the military?

Will you have the Guantanamo Bay prison camp in the budget for next year?

What are your plans for its imminent closure?

Israel bombed a convoy travelling from Syria into Lebanon and a military facility outside of Damascus this week. Your thoughts?

Whoever President Obama nominates for SECDEF, he/she will oversee the introduction of destructive social experimentation and will resist rational force modernization.

Whoever accepts Obama's invitation to the nomination will already be committed to both. Dem. GOP. Greenie. Libertarian. Spider Resurgence Party. Doesn't matter. I can absolutely guarantee it.

No one's going to put their name up, get nominated, and then sabotage the President's goals.

It just doesn't work like that.

He's a token Republican.

So, let's say I'm a conservative Republican sitting on the Senate Armed Services Committee. What am I concerned with, and what do I ask him? Well, I'm certainly not concerned with his opinions about the military and military related matters.

"Senator, why did you pretend to be a Republican all those years prior to this nomination? Don't you think it's time you own up to the serial fraud you committed against all those Nebraskan voters?

"Furthermore, Senator, don't you think your political deception has become so completely anorexic, even those whom Rush Limbaugh calls "low information voters" have long since seen through all the subterfuge which constantly spills out of your lying mouth?"

Tom Friedman, David Brooks and Sandra Fluke walk into a bar... what's the punchline?

Friedman orders French absynth, Brooks orders a dark german ale, and Fluke orders a boilermaker. The bar tender brings them their drinks. That'll be $14.50, he announces.

The three stare back at the bartender.

"Who's paying?" he asks.

That's the punchline, right?

Here's another question: Is there anything Hagel could answer which would disqualify him with Democrats?

True.  But.  The country didn't really know about it, didn't intend to vote for it, and not all Democrats (including some in Congress) are thrilled with it.  So if they made a big deal of it and if enough Democrats balked at the nomination, arguing that Hagel's philosophy isn't consistent with what they'd expected from the President, it might be a warning shot to the President, and might hold him back a little.

So I wouldn't expect much as a Republican, but if I were a Democrat, I'd be making my disapproval known.

The independent Democrats have been Liebermanized out. Those whom the Democrats didn't purge themselves were purged by the Tea Party in 2010.

Those who survived wised up: You're either on the bus or off the bus.

The Joe Manchins still standing will vote for any gay affirmative action, gun confiscation, higher taxes, cap & trade, and legalized partial-birth and post-birth abortion bills, or anything else that comes down the pike from the left aisle.

The candidates wink when they make claims on the campaign , and the voters wink when they step into the voting booth.
