Questions about the Questions

President Barack Obama's appearance today in the White House briefing room was a long time coming given that eight months had passed since his last full press conference. After the questions he received this afternoon, Obama probably wonders why he waited so long.
Questions ranged from 'Just how much of a mandate do you have?' to 'Would you like to withhold judgment on whether you should have been informed earlier about the investigation into the CIA Director?'. Tough stuff. More bizarrely, no one asked the president about arguably the biggest news story of the day: Israel's successful strike against terrorists in Gaza.
As others have already observed, news conferences are apparently no longer the right place for questions about the news.

Sadly, they sleep the sleep of victors. They are more smug than ever, convinced they are doing the People's work, validated in their own minds by Obama's 2.85% margin of popular vote victory.
Russia is a good comparison . . . lots of journos killed but does that cause serious journalistic examination of Obama's Russia Reset policy? Hardly. If it were a right wing regime under which journos died and a Republican were cozying up to it . . . ? I don't even have to finish the thought.

I'm old enough to remember a couple of press conferences that President Nixon had as the Watergate affair unfolded. The press prided itself on its aggressiveness in seeking truth.
How quaint. A press that actually tried to seek truth.

It seems that the press, like the rest of the electorate, is tired of the non-stop politicking that the interminable election brought. I really do wish that the President had been asked to take a stand on the renewed violence in Gaza and southern Israel, but I suppose a brief honeymoon period was inevitable. Bad timing. Bad timing.

Before Obama walked into the first debate, he thought he was going to coast on his own magnificence. The fact that he got spanked didn't even dawn on him until he was overwhelmed by the negative reviews.
I suspect the same dynamic is going on here. He thinks he survived a grilling.

What have the past four years been, if not an extended honeymoon? With the additional pleasure of mutually trashing the exes. The woman sitting next to Ed Henry was gushing like a schoolgirl hoping the team captain will choose her as prom queen. Disgusting.
