I wrote a post for Powerline yesterday pointing out that the IHH's own website--hardly Zionist propaganda, that--makes it very clear where the IHH stands on figures such as the architects of the Beslan school siege, which left 186 children dead. They think Basayev and Maskhadov were noble martyrs, and they don't remotely try to hide that. I wondered if groups endorsing the Gaza Flotilla, such as the Progressive Librarians Guild, really wished to be so closely associated with the IHH. Do you think they realize it? If they do, do you think they think this is somehow inessential?

I received an e-mail this morning suggesting that in pointing this out, I was "trying to put critics of Israel in the same boat as people who support terrorism."

Actually, no. In this case, critics of Israel are--literally--putting themselves in the same boat as people who support terrorism. There is no other way to describe it but "in the same boat."

You could call it a vessel or a ship or a seaborne craft, I guess.

Claire,

I think you're glossing over the most important point here -- which is that now that the Progressive Librarians Guild is in the mix, all hell is going to break loose.

Really though, I'm guessing only a very small percentage of members of groups like PLG know about their associations. Would PLG members jump ship -- ha! -- if they knew more about the IHH?

Probably not. They'd either rationalize it or brush it off like members of so many other groups do when confronted with reality. They've got more important, relevant things on their minds.

It reminds me of Greens who continued to support Cynthia McKinney even after it was clear she was a 9/11 Truther and thought GWB had ordered 5,000 Katrina victims buried in the swamps. "Alright, fine, that's kinda nuts," they'd say -- but what really matters is..."

If you really want a thrill, check out the PLG's statement called, "OPEN LETTER FROM LIBRARIANS AGAINST THE MURDER OF PEOPLE EXERCISING THE RIGHT TO PROTEST AGAINST CORPORATE GLOBALIZATION AT THE GENOA CONFERENCE.

Alright, maybe some PLG members would high-five the IHH folks.

I'll bet that the bulk of dues-paying members of PLG wouldn't (and would deny the facts when confronted; who's better read than a librarian?  Ha!), but their leadership certainly supports terrorist conduct.  Besides, what are the lives of a few children (Israeli or Russian) worth in the scheme of things?  They would've just grown up in a bad world which our comrades at the IHH are trying, like our pince-nez wearing selves, to improve.  Really, you can't make an omelet without breaking a few bourgeois eggs (or post-foetal humanoids).

Any group that fails to see the irony of putting the words "progressive" and "guild" in the same name is not to be trusted with managing libraries, let alone getting involved in international political causes.  While the irony of a letter accusing you of (metaphorically) putting them in the same boat with terrorist supporters is rich, its is also completely befitting of the PLG.

Were it not for the development of the internet and the resulting fact that physical libraries have ceased to be the sole, critical repositories of human knowledge, this (and librarians' unions long-standing association with extreme Marxism in general) might be a scandal.

Instead, the idea of the PLG hooking up with the IHH just reminds me of Monty Python's "The Life of Brian"...

Sigh.  Welcome to my world.  I'm an academic librarian, and I can say from personal experience that librarians can be the most knee jerk liberal and most ill-informed people you'll find.  We also preach the need for critical thinking and thoroughly examining the backgrounds and ideologies of information sources, so if the PLs are true to their calling, they know all about the IHH.

The point could be made that the same activities are being supported by close allies of the White House.  Jodie Evans, of Code Pink was one of Obama's top campaign finance bundlers and we should all know about Ayers and Dorhn.  There is no chance that those people, or Obama, are unaware with whom they are allying.

There is sketchy information out there that I will not link, indicating that both Obama's Code Pink allies and his former Weatherman allies are involved in planning a "New Flotilla" effort for next month.  Nothing solid enough to link, but this is a bigger boat.  Please note, this is not a conspiracy, but documented activities by known, :"Freedom Flotilla" participants.
