Programming Note and The Story of The "Lost" Episode
This week's Ricochet Podcast will appear on Thursday, rather than the usual Wednesday. But we think it's worth it. Our guests this week: Jonah Goldberg and Mark Steyn.
Coincidentally, tomorrow's show is actually our one year anniversary episode. Careful listeners of the show will note that this will be episode 51, so how can that be? Well, there is actually a lost episode of the Ricochet Podcast. Minutes after we started to record the first podcast last January, Los Angeles was struck by a hail storm -- an exceedingly rare weather event in Southern California. The power flickered but never actually went out and the internet connection stayed up, so we kept going. However, when we went back and listened to the show, everything recorded after the power surge was unintelligible and unusable, so the show was never released. We went out and bought an industrial strength power surge protector that afternoon. Haven't had a problem since. Of course, we haven't had any hail since then either.
Here's hoping for good weather tomorrow.

I am a proud early adopter of the Ricochet podcast and have heard every one. Congratulations on a year of absolutely superb and entertaining banter, with such a great variety of guests! I have enjoyed every one. You guys are like musicians jamming with ideas. Thanks!

When I was a kid, we had to trudge miles through snowdrifts to get our Ricochet podcasts.
They came in waxed cartons, and part of the thrill was peeling off the wax with our thumbnails.
Ah, those were the golden days. Spiro Agnew duking it out with Bella Abzug. Don Knotts and Bob Denver yucking it up about sitcoms. Richard Nixon doing a precocious rap version of his "I am not a crook" speech.
And Peter Robinson, piping in with his broken adolescent voice about his love of Camaro's.
Lileks often missed the podcasts due to his busy schedule as a newspaper delivery boy, but his observations about mid-winter lawn dart tourneys and dodgeball contests in Minnesota were priceless.

Re: Programming Note and The Story of The "Lost" Episode
Wouldn't the one year anniversary episode normally be number 53, because 52 completes a full year and 53 occurs on the first week of the second year?
Are there two lost episodes?

Re: Programming Note and The Story of The "Lost" Episode
Greetings, Richochetians! I've been away for awhile as the Holidays were busy and I can't neglect my business forever.
Anyway, major dittos or cudos or props (or whatever the kids say these days) for your one year anniversary. I like to save them up for road trips as they make the journey pass in an instant. I also listen to them at the gym as they make workouts almost tolerable!
Long live the Ricochet podcast which has become my absolute favorite thing to listen to, talk radio/podcast-wise. You guys are awesome!

Re: Programming Note and The Story of The "Lost" Episode
Yea!!! One whole year! I haven't missed a single one.
For a while there the podcasts were coming out on Thursdays. I remember that specifically because I came to look at Thursdays as my favorite day of the week due to the podcasts.

I just got back from my trip out to the Rose Bowl last night (wounds are still fresh..). The back catalog of Ricochet Podcasts proved to be the highlight of an otherwise forgettable 3 hour layover at the Vegas airport.
And I just had to drop $10 inside this beautiful machine when I saw it near the gate.

I'm going with the birthday standard here -- same day (or in this case, week) one year later.

My question still stands. Your first birthday is the 366th day of your life, taking place in 13th month of your life. Everything is one larger than the nominal value.
But I see what's going on now. The first released podcast was January 29, 2010, so this is only the 52nd week of Ricochet's existence.

Re: Programming Note and The Story of The "Lost" Episode
In search of a half-remembered quote, I recently re-listened to quite a number of the early Ricochet podcasts, and fell in love all over again. It's easy to forget just how much quality is packed into one audio file.

Well, there is actually a lost episode of the Ricochet Podcast.
It's a conspiracy! Bring back the lost 18 1/2 minutes!

Re: Programming Note and The Story of The "Lost" Episode
The "lost episode" is one in which Lileks and Rob Long went off on a riff about the claims of global-warming believers that man-caused global warming is responsible for sexual dysfunction among crocodiles.
Unfortunately, the discussion degenerated into jokes about force-feeding Viagra to the beasts and exposing them to pornography.
Peter Robinson, the eminence grise of Ricochet, intervened with 37 minutes of Catholic hymnals, but somehow Lileks managed to finish up the podcast with a graphic comment about gay crocodiles.
It's a shameful episode. But for those who might wish to listen to the debacle, I have it available as an MP3 file. For a modest fee. PayPal, Visa or Mastercard.

Great conception, Franco -- the podcasts as verbal jazz. The interplay is sometimes so clever, funny, and smart I am awed.

And no commercials to bung it up. When I have a long commute, especially on open highway, the podcast is the most enjoyable way to pass a solid hour of dromedaries and yaks by the open highway.

Funny, but the conclusion I draw from this post is that power surge protectors can prevent ice storms. Which is good to know.

Those who don't want to pay Kenneth for the mp3 file should be aware that a transcription of the Lost Podcast of Ricochet is printed on the back of the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia.
