OK, team. Ted Cruz has been declared the winner of the Texas Republican primary for U.S. Senate.

What wonderful news! However did he accomplish it? Was there a good turnout?

Re: Primary Results Open Thread
In early May, I was on vacation in Europe with a group of about 10 highly educated but otherwise normal Texans and I asked them what they thought about Ted Cruz and not one of them knew who he was. For the most part, I think they leaned conservative but apparently politics was not something they folowed closely. I do not disparage that. I hope that a few looked into Mr. Cruz and voted for him.

Tea for Texas!
And in other news from the Lone Star State, there's been a huge upset in the Texas State Senate. Long-time incumbent Sen. Jeff Wentworth of San Antonio has been ousted by Donna Campbell, whose upstart candidacy was supported by the Tea Party. I've often referred to Wentworth as the John McCain of Texas, and that ain't a compliment.
It's been quite an evening thus far...

I like to consider myself an educated Texan, and I voted for Ted Cruz enthusiastically!

Also, it's a win for Sarah Palin, who endorsed and campaigned for Cruz.

Re: Primary Results Open Thread
This is a big deal. One commentator on WOAI radio said it's the biggest deal since John Tower was elected to the Senate in (I believe) 1962.
National Review should get credit for the cover bit they did on Cruz months ago.
It's also fun to note that reports on the Democratic runoff are perfunctory, brief and rare. The Democrat nominee will be some dude named Sadler. The exact opposite of what it used to be not so many years ago. When I was a teenager statewide Republicans were new, rare, and notable.

Via Legal Insurrection, Ted Cruz served Chick-fil-A at his victory party.
Heh.

Yeah, it would seem that she and Jim DeMint have more clout in Texas than Rick Pery, Dick Cheney and Mike Huckabee. Of course endorsements are hobby horse manure. Ted Cruz won because he was able to articulate the message that needs to be heard. I hope it inspires conservatives running for office throughout the US.

I'd have a one word reaction but of course you've mentioned it before. Honestly if Sarah Palin swayed anyone's ideas I'd be surprised - I wasn't surprised that Perry endorsed Dewhurst either - especially if he suspected that Dewhurst might lose!

And back when my husband wrote for NRO, he wrote a profile of Cruz. First national profile of the guy. 2009.

There was no chance that Perry ever would have come out against his lieutenant governor of the past decade. And I agree that the endorsements likely didn't amount to much either way, but it's always nice to see Palin's ever-present critics eat a bit of crow.

I remember the excellent profile--National Review was all in on Cruz. In the past couple of weeks, they renewed their support. Cruz will be a dynamo. The Republicans have built one heckuva bench.
Democrats? I can't think of a single new, exciting Democrat.

Re: Primary Results Open Thread
At the big Glenn-Beck-sponsored Tea Party gathering in Dallas over the weekend (at the Dick Armey FreePAC event,) they had trouble finding anybody in the audience that supported Dewhurst. And Cruz was the only one that showed up, of course.

Ted Cruz will be a star in the senate. He's a Princeton man in the Madisonian tradition. What an asset to have on the Senate judiciary committee!
Rick Perry, self-professed limited government conservative, endorsed Dewhurst, and by extension, Dewhurst's vicious airwave offensive against Ted Cruz. At the end of the day, Governor Perry proved that he won't stand for principles. He just cares about power plays and spin.

Re: Primary Results Open Thread
I think it shows that running a campaign on conservative principles and not apologizing or moderating is the way to win conservative elections. Ted Cruz ran For something and on Principle, not just as an anybody but .... candidate.

Re: Primary Results Open Thread
In NC, the Raleigh and Charlotte papers are simply plugging in an AP story on the victory, featuring a picture of Dewhurst and referring to Cruz as "tea-party darling".
I will be interested if there will be any opinion pieces later. Since "the Tea Party is dead," I guess it must just be those Racistsexisthomophobes trying to destroy the first black President yet again.
