Pride Goeth Before the Fall

Whew. Glad to know Obama's got his priorities straight ... er, in order. Despite the BP mess, McChrystal issue, the blockade-busting ship from Iran and more, Obama still has time to host a "gay pride reception" tonight at the White House.

Re: Pride Goeth Before the Fall
Last time I attended a Gay Pride parade, I got super-soaked. No, really. It was a warmish day. Happened in Chicago, oddly enough.
Rahm was not involved. Wonder if anyone will discuss the plight of gay Israelis, though.

Re: Pride Goeth Before the Fall
Well, as much as we like to poke fun at this President (and others), when they do other things during times of crisis, it is the role of President to do some of this pomp & circumstance. And really, do we want any President (this one especially) focusing 24x7 on any one issue that isn't a matter of national survival?? I think the Federalist in me wants the President to butt out and let the experts handle it.
The more we lambaste him for attending receptions like these (or with Duke, US Soccer team, etc) at the expense of larger issues, the more we imply that the President should be the solution to all major problems. Isn't that what we conservatives are trying to drive out of Washington?
I am all for dinging him for playing golf and appearing detached while many Americans suffer, but I think we are safer avoiding criticism of those things which have always been part of any modern President's repertoire.
I mean, even Reagan took time to hold receptions when he was trying to save the world!

Fabulous!

Re: Pride Goeth Before the Fall
This was probably scheduled far in advance, and it's unreasonable to think the President should cancel everything because he's busy. He'll always be busy.
Re: Pride Goeth Before the Fall
Geez, I don't know. I mean, if I'm supposed to run the PTA meeting, but one of my kids gets sick, well then, I pass the meeting off to another mom. In all three cases I mentioned, lives are at danger -- on the coast, in Afghanistan, in the Middle East --and Obama should be managing the appropriate responses (not necessarily responding himself, I agree there, Charles). I would think that Michelle and Joe could step in for the "reception" and people would understand.

....or he could just appoint a lesbian-gay-bisexual-transgender czar who could handle all the lesbian-gay-bisexual-transgender day-to-day issues and activities, so he could concentrate on energy efficient windows and caulk and stuff.

Cool. That issue is vital to the survival of the nation and the more people and agencies and institutions addressing the matter, the better. :-)

OK. I looked it up on Wikipedia and I'm guessing this is a metaphor but I need it explained... thx.

Weatherization, roundly mocked by Jon Stewart. Just displays the paucity of the Prez's big ideas, and shows maybe he ain't all that bright:

Slight language warning, as Stewart says "that's a lousy hand" except he doesn't say lousy.

I can't believe that kid's final suggestion--"legalizing...nonviolent crime" to stimulate the economy?

Re: Pride Goeth Before the Fall
Hey, drug legalization is the official editorial position of National Review (as well as Reason, obviously). It's got about as much to do with boosting employment as weatherization does, but never let a crisis go to waste. It certainly would free up a bunch of government resources and prison space. Also, it would reduce violent crime. Tupak would still be with us...
So don't go lettin the kid's truly awful haircut distract from his very-important-yet-doomed-to-political-failure message.

Re: Pride Goeth Before the Fall
Kennedy, drug legalization is one thing. I have a problem with legalizing "nonviolent crime." Breach of contract? Auto theft?
As I was writing this, my coworker reminded me that tax evasion is also a nonviolent crime. I hereby officially reverse my position; I am now in favor!

Re: Pride Goeth Before the Fall
Zing! I would also outlaw Citroen-torchin, as the Hugenots in France are wont to do. But drug legalization maybe is a big enough topic for a thread not about gay pride meetings. Actually, it may go to the raison d'etre of the site. Sort of a South Park/Red Eye brand of nearly libertarian conservatism that the kids can enjoy, with thier hula hoops and dungarees and Dr Pepper lipstick and the Chuck Berry and I dunno what. We'll have to wait and see.
Re: Pride Goeth Before the Fall
Dr. Pepper lipstick?
