In an interview with Univision yesterday, President Barack Obama blamed Republican hypocrisy for what he called the "biggest failure" of his presidency -- the absence of comprehensive immigration reform.

What I confess I did not expect, and so I’m happy to take responsibility for being naive here, is that Republicans who had previously supported comprehensive immigration reform -- my opponent in 2008 who had been a champion of it and who attended these meetings -- suddenly would walk away. That’s what I did not anticipate.

Too bad that President Obama didn't ask Senator Obama for advice on comprehensive immigration reform before moving to the White House. If he had, he would not have been quite so "naive." After all, it was Senator Obama who voted for a "poison pill" that was "designed to kill" comprehensive immigration reform in 2007.

Yes, Obama’s “happy” to confess naiveté all right. Why? Because he knows his bootlicks in the media will ignore the absurdity of this sleaze ball playing the victim card.

Did you know that Republicans actually have treated Obama as a political opponent and (shock!) didn’t spend his four years in office calculating how best to make The One look good?  That’s what journalists do, after all.  Why shouldn’t Republicans do that too?  It’s just so ungentlemanly ... it would never happen in Chicago, so one can’t possibly blame four years of failure on the earnest, honest man sent to lead his children into the promised land.

That Obama would make this pathetic claim is hardly surprising.  How journalists can live with themselves is a bit more mysterious, but ultimately unsurprising too.  Why Romney isn't more effective at exploiting Obama's mock naiveté ... that's just depressing.

For those interested, Bill McGurn had a great column on President Obama's immigration record a few months ago.

Here's John McCain's response to Obama's audaciously ridiculous charge.
