I don't know who Chadwick Matlin is, but I'd like to nominate him for a Pulitzer for his live-tweeting of last night's contentious Park Slope Co-Op meeting.

The Awl handily lists all of his tweets, following this introduction:

Last night Park Slope Food Coop held its monthly members meeting. At 7:26 p.m., senior Reuters Opinion editor Chadwick Matlin began live-tweeting the proceedings; two hours and 14 minutes later, "meeting is adjourned." It's difficult to pick a favorite here but "In europe I have been using the biodegradable, and they degrade so fast by the time you're at checkout you don't know where the bag is," "'but my collards won't fit!' — one of the actresses in the silent film PSA," and ""My name is Robert Dow. No relation to Dow Chemical." have to be contenders.

Those aren't even my favorites. See, this is the same Park Slope Co-Op that will be deciding next month whether to vote on whether to ban paprika, hummus and seltzer made in Israel. That subtext makes this tweeting all the more delicious. Here are a few favorites:

Thank you, Mollie. You have made my day happier!

Brilliant.  Alas, I live in Park Slope.  I don't belong to the Co-op, of course, but over the years have met many of its members.  I can only imagine that the monthly meetings would make a Stasi convention look like fun.   Talk about control freaks!  Why would anyone join a supermarket that (a) requires you to work a "shift"; (b) restricts the products you can buy; (c) dictates the kind of bag into which you may put your product?

It makes me want to drop in on meetings at the food co-op just down the hill from our neighborhood, just to listen in. But in a way, I think I already have.

Adam Freedman, do I know you?  I'm over on Lincoln between Seventh and Eighth!  Look for the Romney signs on in the third floor windows...

Seriously, are there any other Ricochet covert non-liberals and leftists reading this?  A Brooklyn meetup would be great--because Manhattan hasn't been worth of much in about 15 years...

Oh.  The post.  Ah yes, the Coop.  I almost joined so many times, but always feared having to listen to and engage in endless lefty banter while working my shift (you have to work at the Coop about 2 hours/month to be a member)  I actually like the idea of VOLUNTARY communitarianism---then again, I just read today in the Brooklyn Paper that Whole Foods got the go ahead for a new store at the base of Park Slope.

PS:  Park Slope is not, I repeat, NOT a ski resort.

We should definitely have a Brooklyn meet-up (I'm not far from you)!

Are there other Brooklynites out there?  Identify yourselves!

"Identify yourselves!"

Wait, are you sure you don't belong to the Coop?

Sorry for the exclamation points, I got excited. Oh, right, the co-op. that place is dumb. My wife went in there once to check it out and they flipped out because she wasn't a member. I see people coming out of there with their groceries in reused cardboard boxes and I roll my eyes.

The best thing about the Park Slope co-op is the large 9-11 memorial sculpture that blocks one of its windows.   The firefighters at the station right next door, who lost a number of their colleagues, set it up right after the attacks, and even those brave enough to use the term "fascist food" didn't dare object.  Here's a photo for the peasants among you who have not had the honor of walking past the co-op (click on the photo to see an enlarged version):

Yeah, that statue looks like it was carved with a chainsaw, as I recall.

Which makes it all the better in front of the co-op.  It just might be my favorite 9-11 memorial.

My three favorite lines from the live tweets:

Proponent [of banning plastic bags] says one option to replace plastic bags is that members can make their own cloth replacements.

And:

Board member tried to cut speech off [comparing overall energy costs of cloth and plastic bags]. "it's going somewhere!" man protests.

And saving the best for last:

Corn production contributes to dead zone on ocean, so that's one thing to consider if we use corn bags.

Coop Twitter mole.  Cool.  Reminds me of an official tweet account that reports on (mostly harmless) activity at the Trader Joe's on Court St. in Brooklyn.

I was just shopping at that Trader Joe's! Now I'm curious about that account ...

Ms. Hemingway, you live in Brooklyn?!

I love that Trader Joe's.  It's in a huge, high ceiling landmarked bank building.  The acoustics, combined with the music they play and the shopping carts give the place a roller rink feel.  I also sense ghosts of the past; good ghosts.

Nope, but one of my best friends lives only a couple blocks from that Trader Joe's. My husband and I had business up there a few weeks ago and brought the kiddos -- thus, the Trader Joe's trip. It was stroller central. My husband jokes that Brooklyn -- and its baby boom -- means it's our central command in the war on terror.

Brooklyn is becomIng more and.more autonomous and separate from Manhattan--we even have a Panera! Seriously, there's no longer much of a point going to Manhattan for food or fun.
