Chicago teachers aren't the only ones indoctrinating kids in progressive ideas such as the evils of being measured by results rather than attitudes. An Oregon principal recently told the Portland Tribune that American food is a symbol of "white privilege."

Verenice Gutierrez picks up on the subtle language of racism every day.

Take the peanut butter sandwich, a seemingly innocent example a teacher used in a lesson last school year.

“What about Somali or Hispanic students, who might not eat sandwiches?” says Gutierrez, principal at Harvey Scott K-8 School...

Oh, there's more.

Through intensive staff trainings, frequent staff meetings, classroom observations and other initiatives, the premise is that if educators can understand their own “white privilege,” then they can change their teaching practices to boost minority students’ performance.

Last Wednesday, the first day of the school year for staff, for example, the first item of business for teachers at Scott School was to have a Courageous Conversation — to examine a news article and discuss the “white privilege” it conveys.

The school is also starting a drum class open only to black and Latino boys. This is where I start seeing signs like "whites need not apply."

The local school district's spokesman said the district saw no problem with the principal's statements. I see a problem that, in a school in need of obvious academic improvement, school staff are spending time on race and sensitivity workshops rather than math and reading training. These kids' problem is not that they're black or brown or purple, it's that they can't read.

Here's a memo to parents and conservatives everywhere: It's not just Chicago union members and Portland principals steeped in failed and outrageous progressive teaching methods. Progressivism reigns in every public school, and state-mandated certification ensures every public school teacher conforms

But there are alternatives

Crow's Nest: Butter-side up or butter-side down? · 1 hour ago

Bottom slice butter-side up, top slice butter-side down.

Otherwise your hands get very messy. · 17 minutes ago

Nah, that's why you fry them.  Makes the butter soak right in, you get a lovely crusty edge, goes well with the mayo and cheese. · 1 minute ago

He didn't say for fried sandwiches.

Personally, my favorite fried sandwich is the Monte Cristo.

But that's probably racist of me. ;) · 0 minutes ago

Count on it!

Sandwiches themselves are racist!!!!!111!!!!!eleventy!!! · Sep 13 at 10:03am

Of course they are!!! They were invented by The Earl of Sandwich: a dead, white male.

Next comes the great Grilled Cheese vs Quesodilla War. · 2 hours ago

As the tale goes, the Old Earl was so preoccupied with gambling that he would not leave the gaming table for a proper meal. More examples of greedy white old men. Gads. No mention if the Earl ever won the hand though.

Honestly have never an authentic Philly Cheesesteak, just imitations that were lacking in whatever sense that makes.

A good French Dip must be as equally hard to find.

So, if I'm eating a PB&J during a Chicago vs. Detroit game...a Bulls/Pistons game is less racist than a Blackhawks/Red Wings game?  Where does a Bears/Lions game fit in?

Seriously?  The "white privilege" of K12 teachers?  This is absurd.  After a certain point, cultural nihilism simply backfires.  Who cares if some ethnicities don't like PB&J sandwiches?  Why must everyone else be denied them?  There's nothing wrong with asking for your specific ethnic food, but demanding that the food of some ethnicities be excluded, simply because they belong to the majority is absurd.

The "white privilege" narrative is very real in education training (if such classes can be called that).  In fact, my wife had to read and respond to a piece called something like "Unpacking the Backpack of White Privilege" while she was working toward her teacher certification in Texas.  I read the article...it was unbelievable.  One might think that Texas would be the last place an idea like this would be pushed.  And yet many administrivia types and "teacher trainers" see such ideas as "white privilege" as gospel; it is as pervasive in so-called conservative states as it is in left-leaning (or Leftist) areas.

Joseph Eagar: Who cares if some ethnicities don't like PB&J sandwiches?

The scary thing is that it makes us talk like we accept the premise if we don't want to take 200 words to make it clear that claiming there's an ethnic desire for this or that kind of food is...well, ludicrous.  A higher rate of sensitivity might make folks with an ethnicity less likely to like a specific kind of food-- IIRC, that's why milk products still aren't as popular in Japan-- but the idea that there's an Ethnic Food Pack is rather insulting, and illuminating.  What better way to show that you're a racist jerk than to "defend" an ethnic group from foods "they don't eat"... like a really inexpensive, easy childhood staple of a country?

Why butter a sandwich if you're not going to fry it?  Grilled cheese, yum.... A staple for Fridays at our house, or When I'm Too Tired To Think Of Something Better.

Actually, I took Crow's Nest's comments as referring to a lesser-known Dr. Seuss book, The Butter Battle Book. Like many Seuss books, it's from a lefty perspective, this time about the Cold War arms race, but the two sides are separated by whether they eat their bread butter-side up or butter-side down.

I realize that this is a minor side point, but Portland is actually in Oregon, not Washington.

I was all ready to be outraged over what was happening in my state, but it turned out not to be my state after all! I'm sure that just as terrible PC acts are being perpetrated in Washington state, albeit with less publicity.

Mmm...that grilled cheese with apple slices is one of my favourites due to quick prep time but my sons like it too.

Here in Spartanburg, we have a local delicacy:  the Redneck Burger from the Nu-Way Lounge.  Anyone want to unpack the symbolism and political deviance bound up in that one?
