Poll Results: Romney Takes The Lead
In our latest poll of Ricochet Members (Jan. 4-6), 37% selected Mitt Romney as the candidate they'd run against Obama. This widens Romney's lead to 21 points over his nearest competitor, Rick Santorum. Santorum, Newt Gingrich, and Rick Perry are clustered together at about the 15% level.
Romney's gain appears to be partly at the expense of Gingrich. Gingrich led Romney in our mid-December poll by 33% to 30%, but over half of Gingrich's support fizzled away over the holidays. Notably, Gingrich's "Too flawed in other ways" metric jumped from 59% to 73% during that period, along with a drop in perceived electability from 61% to 45%.
In contrast, the perceived electabilities of the other candidates have remained relatively constant. Romney's is at 87%, while Santorum, Gingrich, Perry and Jon Huntsman are between 42% and 51%.
Santorum debuts in our poll with 16% of you supporting him. He leads the pack in the coveted "No serious flaws" category, with 38% of you viewing him this way.

Re: Poll Results: Romney Takes The Lead
In sports terms, Romney may not have a strong offense, but he's got a hell of a defense, using ads from PAC supporters. He wouldn't call it "his," but get in his way, and the advertising hammer comes down hard.

Part of the problem with Santorum is that he's been so low in the polls that he's never been vetted. We'll all learn more in the days ahead.
Even so, I find him a lot more appealing than Newt, who seems to have gone over the edge.

Fewer people would select "No Serious Flaws" for any candidate if an "Acceptable" option existed. The "Too Conservative" and "Too Flawed in Other Ways" options imply that a candidate is unacceptable. The poll would be more accurate with an "Acceptable" option.

Hmm... I suppose ...
I pick "Too flawed in other ways" as my "Acceptable" surrogate.

I selected "Not Conservative Enough" for all of them, but chose a candidate for the first question.

Re: Poll Results: Romney Takes The Lead
Surprising (to me at least) that even here at Ricochet, where members are likely more conservative than the Republican primary electorate, Romney's line very much echoes his line in other polls.
The man may not be a great candidate, but he's running an impressive campaign --plodding upward, apparently irresistably. We'll see.

Re: Poll Results: Romney Takes The Lead
So... Governor Perry comes in 2nd on "no serious flaws" and only 7 votes behind Santorum on electability. Are the cutting-edge members of Ricochet predicting the next "boomlet" should Santorum wilt? Perry's planning on being in our neighborhood for lunch this Tuesday while everyone else is busy in New Hampshire. Maybe he'll have a comment about the bellwether Ricochet poll.
