The upside to a city that can't plow the snow and can't collect the garbage? From the NYDaily News:

A man who tried to jump to his death from a midtown building  Sunday survived the plunge because he landed in a pile of garbage, officials said.

Police believe the man jumped from the ninth floor of a building on W. 45th St. near Eighth Ave. a few minutes before noon. He was rushed to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition.

"He landed on a garbage pile," one official said. "That's the only reason he's alive."

Trash collection in the city was suspended because of the Dec. 26 snowstorm.

The man, who is in his 30s, was not identified.

Something for Mayor Bloomberg to put into his memory book, I guess.

This somehow reminds me of a Smothers Brothers number.

Yeah, but how many rats did he kill?

Uncollected garbage!

This has the potential to revolutionize suicide prevention efforts in Detroit and Camden.

At least Christian Bales' mamma was always there. Some of us were fortunate to see him land in the pile a couple times as a part of one of the best movies we've seen in awhile, right up there with Winter's Bone, City Island.

It's a good fight movie, though it does tend to drag in places.  I would rate it 3rd in the genre, behind Raging Bull and Cinderella Man.

Certainly the best thing Mark Wahlberg has done since Boogie Nights.

This also reminds me of the episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm ("Nanny From Hell") where Cheri Oteri pushes a pregnant Suzie Green over the side of a balcony but she is saved by the pile of 12 or so sponge cakes that Larry had bought for Jeff for his birthday from his favorite bakery and Suzie had thrown into the garbage because she didn't want Jeff getting any fatter.

When it's not your time, it's not your time.

Maybe "the island" still has work for this unidentified man in his 30's to do.

I'm loathe to mock the unfortunate, but apparently this was the guy's third suicide attempt.  He'd previously cut his own throat and subsequently tried to hang himself.

Perhaps he needs competent end-of-life counseling.

Hopefully the guy will recover fully.  And then he can return to work and paying taxes which cover the sanitation department's costs of not plowing the snow and not picking up the trash.

Or maybe Obamacare's death panel.

This was his third attempt?  I'm wondering what that means, in psychological terms.  Does it mean he really doesn't want to succeed, or that no matter what the guy does, his life still stinks?
