The Pew Research Center is out with a new post-debate poll.

The results are dramatically different than their poll in September. Then, Obama was up 51-43 with likely voters. Now Romney is up 49-45 with the same cohort.

And in September, Obama had an 18-point lead over Romney when it came to female voters. Now, they're tied.

More from the report:

More generally, the poll finds Romney’s supporters far more engaged in the campaign than they were in September. Fully 82% say they have given a lot of thought to the election, up from 73% in September. The new survey finds that Romney supporters hold a 15-point advantage over Obama backers on this key engagement measure. Supporters on both sides were about even in September.

Coming out of the debate, Mitt Romney’s personal image has improved. His favorable rating has hit 50% among registered voters for the first time in Pew Research Center surveys and has risen five points since September. At the same time, Obama’s personal favorability rating has fallen from 55% to 49%.

I'm sure Romney supporters are elated with this news, but it's also just a fantastic reminder of how volatile these polls are and how the next few weeks should be a crazy ride.

But if you'd like to review some of the Romney obituaries that ran in the media in the last month, no one will begrudge you.

If the debate had such a decisive impact on the way Romney and his policies are viewed, what does it say about the effectiveness with which Stuart Stevens is running other aspects of the campaign?

The Obama commercial featuring Andrea "Obama Girl" Mitchell ran numerous times during the baseball and football games yesterday.  Didn't see any Romney commercials.  This is probably because I live in New York and Romney is only responding in places where it counts.  I hope so.

I think a better explanation is that the baseball games are on TBS, and we all know who Ted Turner prefers.

In the morning PPP (a Democrat firm) will also come out with a poll with Romney ahead.

I was finally able look at the link, Drudge did a good job crashing the website, the details make this poll look even worse for Obama than a 4 point lead for Romney. I would not get too excited about one or two polls though, we still have a ways to go.

Stevens has been running his campaign on a lower budget than Obama's, particularly when you take the primary into account. When that's your position, it's foolish to try to keep pace throughout the cycle. Obama's been well ahead in part because he's been spending much more on commercials, outspending Mitt on cable by 9-1 for a while.

The other reason that Mitt's ads have been less plentiful is because the campaign has been spending very heavily indeed on the ground game. Far more effort has gone into it than into any previous ground game and this has involved a fair amount of capacity building.

This week (Ryan v Biden) then next week (the next RvO debate) will be the key.  Last week was the sales pitch, these will close the deal if effective.  Obama will basically call Romney a liar for the $5 trillion tax cut stuff.  If Romney can confidently and effectively neuter these arguments, he wins the election.  PERIOD!

Here is the PPP poll I mentioned before, it is out now, R 49 O 47. (Sorry it is on the Kos's website, but what do expect from a Dem firm?)
