Just after posting the State of the Union preview below, our own Peter Robinson jumped onto NPR's "Talk of the Nation" to opine on what we can expect from President Obama's SOTU speech, and how this being a re-election year may influence the topics the President chooses to address.  Have a listen—Peter joins the program at min. 10:55.

Lemme guess - Mr Obama sounds like the second coming of Mr Reagan?

That was beautiful, Peter.  Great point about needing a tie-breaker.

With all respect, I think we would all benefit if you made more appearances on left-leaning media outlets.  You bring patience and a sense of class to the discussion that disarms the stereotype of mean conservatives, while still sticking to your guns.

I will be very interested to see how Mitch Daniels goes about responding to the SOTU.

Thanks tons.  From your lips to the producers' ears.

I love how the one caller started out claiming to be a "republican on paper" or somesuch, before launching into some standard Democrat talking point or other.  I guess "Some of my best friends are..." has been done to death.

Oh, and good job Peter.  You showed gracious restraint, and yet still didn't let all the liberal talking points go completely unchallenged.  "Ahem," indeed.

That was kindof weird.  Out of all the things we need to do to improve our competitive position in the world, high speed rail has got to be last.

I liked how Peter was straight on the threat Obama poses.  I think a lot of us can tell that the political winds are shifting--fiscal conservatives, many of us new to politics, pushed Republicans heavily to cut the budget in 2011, and that hurt the party badly.  Since economic growth may start picking up in 2012, Obama has an opportunity: he can pivot towards a more "inspirational" stance, and try and get people to associate the "bad times" in 2011 with Republicans.

As always, great work, Mr. Robinson.

The last caller, Mike from Fort Meyers, lamented that no politician on either side of the aisle, with the exception of Ron Paul, has presented (I'm paraphrasing here) a fiscal plan that adds up.  Isn't this exactly what Paul Ryan did?  How has a person with the political curiosity necessary to engage with a political talk radio show been able to remain unaware of this, simultaneously failing even to acknowledge the fact that the Democrat-controlled senate has not passed a budget in 1000 days?

Ahem indeed!

Exactly.  As little as two months ago, Obama looked weak.  Today he strikes me as pretty darned formidable.

Indeed--that's precisely what Obama is doing in the 2 minute clip Peter gave us in another post.
