One of the most flattering moments in my life occurred last night during Peter Robinson's talk at Hillsdale College. At the end of the Q&A, I rose, introduced myself as Ricochet member Fredösphere, and Peter, by that time enjoying himself immensely before the audience, pointed to me with a big grin and said:

"Oh! So you're that guy!"

And afterwards, Ricochet member Prowler (who admitted he is usually a Lurker) ran up to me and asked me to write down my member name on a piece of paper: it wasn't signing autographs, really, but it felt like that.

Fredosphere and Peter Robinson

I'm still basking in the glow of Hillsdale. The college is an alien planet where the natives are sane. Making friends among the crowd attending the lecture series was effortless--so many people engaged me in conversation. The happy hour afterwards was more of the same, with excellent food and drink, and a brief chat with Peter who made himself available to all, generously.

Peter's talk was on Ronald Reagan's speech A Time For Choosing, and the way it became a model for the speech writers in the Reagan White House. The videos of Reagan speaking, plus Peter's own presence, lent the event a vicarious electricity. Peter loosened up significantly during the Q&A, what with running jokes and literally prostrating himself before Hillsdale's history department chairman.

Best of all, as you can see from my photographic proof, I received from Peter his Apostolic Blessing in the laying on of his hands. (Note the unique, square halo above Peter's head.) I guess this means I'm now destined to become a speechwriter, maybe for Dr. Barack Obama, the Mad Scientist. Or whatever.

That's too awesome.

The "laying on of his hands" and square halo is a laugh riot.

What fun!  I was to have been there too, but had to cancel in the end, much to my regret.

A square halo seems oddly appropriate for Peter, doesn't it?

My neighbor down the street is Jim Larkin, played on Hillsdale's national champion football team back in the 50's, returned later to coach and scout for them and was recently inducted into their Hall of Fame.  Suffice it to say that he more than regales my daughters in Hillsdale gear (we have Hillsdale baby "ones-ies" on up through hoodies for toddlers and sweatshirts and polos for mommy and daddy), he fully expects them to select Hillsdale as their eventual college on those merits alone one day.  I am hoping to take a trip with him next fall to catch a home game.

Mollie Hemingway, Ed.

Hillsdale is a great school. Such a rarity in higher education.

And very cool story, Fredosphere!

It's so nice to see what Ricocheteers look like.  Fredosphere doesn't look a bit like a crazed right-wing hater.   [Fredo:  nice camouflage job].

Re Hillsdale.  My son-in-law served an LDS mission in Michigan 10+ years ago.  The first place he served was Hillsdale.  He loved the town, loved the people, and the students of Hillsdale (he said there was something special about the school).   Hillsdale remains in his memory as a wonderful city filled with wonderful people.

I get my hard news from MSNBC:  according to them, they're everywhere.  I haven't actually met any--I just assume I'm a statistical anomaly.

It's nice to put a face to the handle, Fredo. But frankly, I'm a bit jealous.

You know Peter, you folks don't have to hide it when you come to Michigan. I could've attended the talk without pestering you.

No, really.

Well... probably.

Six lectures and two and a half days later one wishes there was another Ronald Reagan to lead this country in 2012. Those who are only reading newspapers are missing the great and knowledgable blogging of people like Peter Robinson on Ricochet, Steven Hayward on Powerline, and Ronald Radosh on Hotair. My first two clicks every day are Powerline(my hometown) and Ricochet. I am forever trying to educate people about these sites!
