In case anyone is wondering what it’s like to be an Israeli living within range of Hamas's rockets …

You mean the media narrative that Israelis are nothing but fascist oppressors isn't true?

Of all the ugly things the MSM does (and it's worse with the BBC and other foreign news outlets), the libel of Israel is the most morally reprehensible.

Not that it's a competition, but it beats Gaza

As Israeli missiles fall, Gaza residents in border areas flee

In three days of fighting, 10 Palestinian civilians have been killed, among them six children. Over 250 civilians have been wounded.

If I could choose the people to try living within range of Hamas's rockets, the entire BBC staff would be my first choice.

Perhaps, Hamas and Islamic Jihad could try locating their materiel, rockets and launchers somewhere other than beside children's playgrounds and mosques? The Israelis did drop hundreds of thousands of leaflets warning non-combatants not to be physically near Hamas operatives or sites during Israel's activities, but it is Hamas that is responsible for (a) wearing uniforms to make them distinguishable from non-combatants, (b) carry weapons openly and (3) locating away from non-combatant areas. Critics of Israel need to talk to Hamas, not Israel, tell Hamas they have lost, and to disarm, whereupon, the Israelis, who left Gaza in 2005, would leave them alone.

As the saying goes:  If the Arabs lay down their arms, there will be no war. If Israel lays down her arms, there will be no Israel.

Gene - I'm not particularly defending Hamas (or attacking Israel), but I think it's fair to say that if the Palestinians had laid down their arms there would be so many settlements that even the pretence of a two state solution would be no longer viable.  (As it is, it's less and less believable.) And that said - when you point out that Israeli civilians in suffer terribly and live in an awful situation (true) it disturbs me that you don't recognise the far worse situation of civilians in Gaza due to the same conflict.  There are civilians on both sides of the line, let's not forget that.

So, if the Palestinians lay down their arms there would be Jews living nearby? That's not the same as being slaughtered.
Israel pulled the settlements out Gaza. Gaza elected Hamas. The goal of Hamas is the destruction of Israel. There is no equivalence.

If they lay down their arms there will never be a Palestinian state, because why would anybody bother to negotiate with them?  The Irgun and the Stern Gang didn't get Israel by laying down their arms.

They got Israel by accepting the deal that was offered to them. The Palestinians were offered a state and responded with the 2nd intifada.

Matt, that's debatable, and in any case the Palestinians don't seem to see it that way.  (In their shoes would you?  Honestly?)

We had a siren here in Jerusalem during the early part of services last night. I don't yet know exactly where anything fell, but some of those in attendance could hear the thud.

The son of one of my neighbors received a reserve call-up last night.
