I was just about to post this. Glad I checked over here first.

When even the New Yorker compares an incumbent Democratic president to an empty chair...there are major problems.

I'm curious to see how SNL treats the debate. Do they still find some way to make fun of Romney? Or do they take off the kid gloves and make fun of how lame Obama's debate performance was?

Wow. I thought this must be a fake, but there it is on HuffPo.

"This image seemed like a proper response to the first Presidential debate," Blitt told the New Yorker's Culture Desk. "But I’m not sure I realized how hard it is to caricature furniture."

Obama as the Empty Chair President further cemented into the American consciousness — that can only be a good thing.

I have been wondering the same thing. I have been avoiding the show, but I actually might tune in just for that.

Thank you Trace, I was about to do the same. My question was :

" Is it time to renew my subscription ?"

Since I cancelled during the Bush Admin, I think that I need two things :
A personal apology from Remnick and the formal resignation letter from Rik Hertzberg, otherwise I am not convinced.

But I can smell the buyer's remorse all the way out here in flyover.

And it is sweet !!

Yay Clint !!

Yes, I am feeling lucky -punk !!

SNL will focus on Romney as a bully (pinning Obama and cutting his hair?) or Silent Jim Lehrer as getting walked all over, but neither could be as funny as this.

I thought Mitt missed a zing for this in the debates when talking about "sitting down at the table" and being a leader while working with people across the aisle:A leader sits down at the table. Do you know what you get when you don't show that leadership, you don't sit down at the table, have the tough discussion and reach a compromise? (Pause) An empty chair.

Actually, SNL has been fairly hard on Obama during its 'Weekend Update' segment.  Last week's was a classic where Seth Myers took him to task for saying that government couldn't be changed from the inside.

SNL has a major conservative-leaning writer in Jim Downie.   If he writes the opener, it'll probably be pretty harsh.

John Stewart was absolutely brutal to Obama on his Thursday show.   Stewart is a far-left type, but he's also got integrity and he's willing to call it as he sees it, and he saw a President who let supporters let him down in a big way.   He even showed screen shots of his personal campaign contribution e-mail pleas from Obama, and mocked him for not putting in the kind of effort he expected from his supporters.

There are sycophants in the media, and then there are people on the left who believed in Obama and are now seeing the reality.  Some of them are finally speaking out.  Let's hope SNL follows in that vein.

And isn't it interesting that Clint Eastwood's roundly-mocked routine at the RNC has generated the most powerful anti-Obama meme of the election season?   Maybe some people owe Clint an apology.

The New Yorker just gave its reader permission to vote for Romney.

I am not surprised. I watched Tom Wicker at The New York Times jump ship in October, 1980.

We may not get a narrative from the legacy press about Obama's laziness.

My prediction is that SNL will show Romney telling increasingly outrageous (and funny) lies, and Obama just standing there letting him.  Or texting his wife telling her how sorry he is that he missed their anniversary.

Thanks to the editor who fixed my double post with Trace over at the Member Feed.  I need to check over there first to find when I am being scooped!

Come on, people! This cover was commissioned weeks ago and was intended to mock the Right, as was the Michelle as Angela Davis fist-bumping Barack as Talibani cover. The subtext is that, unlike at the RNC, Romney will have to deal with the very much present President at the debate and will get his clock cleaned. The saving grace for the artist and the magazine is that, in the wake of Romney's debate victory, the image can be reinterpreted as an angry wake-up call to Obama to show up and fight next time. Nobody at The New Yorker or Conde Nast is rooting for Mitt or advocating that their readers vote for him.
