Charlie-Hebdo

You may have heard that the offices of Charlie-Hebdo were firebombed here in Paris early this morning. The usual story: The issue was in honor of the victory of Tunisia's Islamist party. They renamed the magazine Shariah-Hebdo and announced that it would be "guest edited" by the Prophet.

The magazine's site was hacked, too. The redirect page says, "You keep abusing Islam's almighty Prophet with disgusting and disgraceful cartoons using excuses of freedom of speech." The message was in both English and Turkish. The Turkish daily Hürriyet is featuring this story on its front page, but leaving out the part about the message in Turkish.

The French are appropriately outraged. Minister of the Interior Claude Guéant said the magazine "expresses by its very existence the freedom of the press, which is a sacred freedom in France." Ecology Minister Nathalie Kosciusko-Morizet called the bomb-throwers "enemies of democracy." The editor of Liberation offered them their offices. Mohammed Moussaoui, head of the French Council for the Muslim Faith, said his organization deplores "the very mocking tone of the paper toward Islam and its prophet but reaffirms with force its total opposition to all acts and all forms of violence."

I've reproduced the cover as a gesture of solidarity.

When they burn books they will in the end burn people also. - The German poet exiled to Paris, Heinrich Heine.

Des grillades de viande de porc la solidarité des sandwiches pour tout le monde.

And cole slaw, sweet tea, and pie.

How many cars have burned ? More restless youths reading now ?
