Apparently The Atlantic's chief gynecologist Andrew Sullivan buys some British reporter's claim that Palin doesn't know how to hunt or fish. Something tells me that Sullivan and the British reporter probably have equivalent levels of knowledge on the subject.

Sullivan writes:

It takes the British media to point out the obvious.

What's the obvious? That Palin doesn't know thing one about hunting or fishing. You can read Guy Adam's argument here.

It's all based on one and a half minutes from an edited trailer for Palin's new show -- the popular "Sarah Palin's Alaska." Noted sports enthusiast David Frum is also spreading the meme.

I didn't watch the trailer or the show yet, although something tells me Palin would laugh at the claim her sportsmanship is an elaborate ruse, but I bring all this up to highlight the obsession.

I'll admit that I find Palin interesting. But the obsession and paranoia of her critics fascinates me so much more. Her critics hang on her every word, watch her every appearance, ruminate on her every thought. The liberals I follow on Twitter mention her multiple times EACH DAY. It's unbelievable. And sometimes, like seeing Frum join Sullivan, of all people, it's hilarious.

The part I found most humorous about that twit at the Independent was him saying that "a pump action shotgun is a barbarous weapon that has no place in someone's personal armory."

Just how strong are the drugs in the UK these days?

Palin and her husband were running a commercial fishing operation at one time, with Sarah filling in as captain when Todd was busy with something else. I suspect that in the first episode they were just using the fishing guide's rental equipment, and not worrying too much about style points. They were with their kids just having fun. And as for the safety of pointing a gun outward while reloading, what exactly was the danger? She's pointing it out toward the Alaska wilderness--not East London. She might as well be pointing it at the Moon.

Now that's real elitism: an Englishman scorning the use of anything other than a $2,500 side-by-side that great-grandaddy had some artisan craft for him. "Anything else would be a crass vulgarity", Sir Guy snorted, as his Head Huntsman loaded the Range Rover with the limp carcasses of fifty grouse killed in the last hunt (which hunt also saw the slight wounding of one of the beaters, who caught a load of No. 6 fired from the wavering muzzle of the Duke of Dingleby, age 96).

"And as for not using the dry fly," Sir Guy continued, his voice quivering with prematurely-aged rage, his nascent wattles quivering with righteous indignation. "It's...it's...it's...the end of civilization as we know it. Redneck barbarity! Yankee outrages! Demn cheek! It..."

He then had a stroke, and died.

(All this in a newspaper that supported the ban of fox hunting, damn their lefty impudence.)

I hope if some punk ever comes through my window at night that he knows that quote. He'll probably escape with minor flesh wounds while I roll about the floor laughing.

I guess super stud Guy Adams thinks that the only respectable use for a Remington 870 is floor blowing the door hinges off when the SAS take down some jihadi. I'm tellin' ya.

Good grief, Pseudo, ya gotta be careful with those allusions...don't you remember how that contest ends? The Atlantic's OBGYN doubtless does, since he was up at Oxford as he'd remind you, and will soon accuse you and the entire Ricochet enterprise of hate speech, and perhaps a RICO charge. I'm probably opening myself up to RICO prosecution by just responding to your post. Or participating in this thread.

For those interested, here is the Upper Class Twit of the Year contest.

Give the Brits a little credit; they did invent the Howdah pistol. It's a sawed-off, double-barrelled, little number chambered in .54 caliber used to keep tigers off the backs of their elephants while on safari. I supose there's nothing like 400 pounds of rampaging cat to make one see the light.

I don't know of anyplace where it is alleged that Palin likes fly-fishing, a la, say, Matt Labash or Dick Cheney. She does know how to handle a net, the method used by actual commercial fishermen.

I wonder if any of these folks ever check into any of these rumors any more, if as long as the topic matches pre-conceived ideas ("Palin is a phony idiot")? We have photos of her from her teen-age years hunting with her father. And show me any experienced boaters who never stand up in the boat.

As criminal law Prof. Philip Johnson used to say, "When something's just got to be true, just about any evidence will do."

Liberals are obsessed with Sarah Palin because they are scared silly of her. We tend to forget that, when Palin was nominated for VP in 2008, the Democrats were paralyzed for two full weeks. Finally, they got the attack machine up and running, and they have given her no respite since. For the MSM, the anti-Palin narrative is a 24/7/365 story. And they will never give her any breathing room because they know that, given the right circumstances, Palin could become a female Ronald Reagan. To make matters worse, she was badly served by the Old GOP Guard in 2008 and blinkered trolls like Karl Rove continue to snipe at her.

In this excellent video, Bill Whittle explains the situation perfectly:

One other point: Beyond their general fear and hatred, liberals despise Palin because she refused to abort her handicapped baby. In the eyes of the Left, for whom abortion is a sacrament, that makes Palin (literally) a loathsome heretic, and they will never forgive her.

Andrew Sullivan should know something about dangerous sports, considering his tawdry heretofores.

I find it hard to imagine going after salmon with a spinning rod, myself, but maybe in Alaska it depends what kind of water you're looking at? I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if you couldn't find an English sport who ever did it that way, but then it's the poachers who actually care about eating the salmon, and I doubt you'd ever come across one of them using a fly rod.

Palin sounds more than a little lax in the safety department, but that doesn't mean she can't shoot & skin a moose. As for the gun in her bedroom, I doubt it's for hunting! I'm plenty handy with an old fashioned shotgun, but I'm heading off to the local shooting range to learn how to handle a pistol.

Having quasi-leapt to Mama Grizzly's defense, I have to agree with Molly. The obsession is more more interesting than the complaints, and the speed with which Frum ran with the story says a lot more about his character than hers.

Every political movement has it's enemies (yes, even ours). But the for the legitimate ones they are legitimate targets. We have Mr. Obama, Mr. Reid and Mrs. Pelosi. But the Democrats obsess on the one, singular person who holds no office, yields no Constitutional power or heads no party. Why?

What does she represent that they fear so much? Is it her ability to connect with the average man? Does she represent a break with traditional liberal concepts of feminine success?

I'm almost at a loss to describe the idiocy of the critics. I mean... seriously. I've been fishing since I was a toddler, and I never picked up a fly rod until I was 30. Even now, I sure as hell wouldn't fly fish from a boat, much less a boat full of people. And the gun handling? Mrs. Palin didn't flag anybody with the muzzle and kept her finger off the trigger until she was ready so shoot. I wish I could get my Soldiers to be so careful!

This is a perfect distillation of the Palin phenomenon, EJ. What a bankrupt collection of snobs and pseudo-sophisticates the left has become! The more they pile on, deluded and demented, the more I start to really like Sarah Palin.

Casey, JM, and others: I love my fly rod, and I don't regret a second of the hours and days I've spent casting fruitlessly for trout.

But when I'm hungry, and the bluefish are running off the coast, I always always pick my 20 year-old spinning rod.

There's nothing worse than an equipment snob.

Pseudo-sophisticate has sort of a nice ring to it.

A good fisherman is adept at hunting fish with any method. As for the shotgun safety, meh, so long as she wasn't pointing the weapon at anybody.

Here's an idea for the reality show finale: Sarah Palin v. Guy Adams in a Fishing Tournament, a Sporting Clays contest, and IPSC with a Colt Python.

The Independent thinks Levi Johnson is a reliable source on matters Palin.  Adding the Sullivan to the chain of evidence with his 50,000 Watt Palin derangement syndrome just leads to great painful weeping gales of laughter. How did the Times and the Atlantic both manage to seize upon this ex-National Reviewer? I found the Sullivan suspect when he wrote for NR.  It was just very important to him to say how he approved of W over and over again until he flipped like a wooden nickel.

For the Sullivan, it is never over until he puts on the rhinestone tiara and hoop skirt and and staggers all unsteady for center stage to sing la Fin.
