Professor Rahe to the white courtesy phone.

RFK and what appear to be Catholic seminarians, in Ohio (campaigning for Frazier Reams Jr.’s ultimately failed bid for governorship), 1966. By Bill Eppridge for Life.

If I had to guess, I’d say these guys probably attended the Pontifical College Josephinum in Columbus which, then as now, I think, is the largest seminary in Ohio. But it could be a diocesan seminary, I suppose.

It started with civil rights for blacks--a good thing--but by the 1970s, it went a little overboard, with anti-military protests and all manner of socialist-inspired wealth transfer schemes. Parts of the Church were seduced by the same shortsighted leftwing foolishness as the rest of society. But they started from a very good place--from here:

Ah, Liberation Theology. Where you could have your Marxism and your Bible too... but the latter only if it didn't conflict with the former. Jesus went from the Messiah to Head Socialist Revolutionary. John Paul II wasn't just a blessing to the Catholic Church, I honestly believe... from the bottom of my non-Catholic heart... that he was God-sent for the whole world. And he may well have saved Catholicism from itself.
