I don't know if it's wise to admit this on Ricochet, but I like to think you can always count on me for the truth, so I'll just say it. I'm so sick of politics that I don't want to hear another word about the election; and I certainly don't want to write one. Besides, I suspect everything that can be said has been said. Surely I can't be the only one?

But I just found a way to talk about something I'm actually interested in right now and to tie it in--plausibly!--with election news. You'll be so impressed.

I'm sure you're all aware of the upcoming fight between Manny Pacquiao and Antonio Margarito, right? Here's the background on Pacquiao for those of you who've been living under a rock:

And many of you will know that Pacquiao--this is my completely plausible tie-in--is a politician. Moreover, Pacquiao has just flown to Las Vegas to endorse Harry Reid.

Now, the thing about Margarito is that much as one wishes to root for him--as the underdog and as the guy who didn't just fly to Las Vegas to endorse Harry Reid--it's kind of hard to do it with a straight face, because he's a lying, dishonorable cheat:

Margarito still claims his innocence, saying that he had no knowledge of the plaster-of-paris applied to his hands before his (losing) fight with ‘Sugar’ Shane Mosley last year, but very few believe the former champ and it would have perhaps have been better to acknowledge the mistake and take his punishment with dignity.

So, the question I put to Ricochet is--which, really, is worse? Wrapping your hands with plaster-of-Paris before a match, or endorsing Harry Reid?

Who do you more want to see knocked out?

i'd rather see pacquiao knocked out. i'm not surprised he supported reid. the guy supported the corrupt government of gloria macapagal arroyo too, who was caught on tape trying to rig the 2004 presidential elections.

btw, when pacquiao first ran for office in 2007, he lost because of his links to that said administration.

I hadn't thought of myself as living under a rock, but it must be so because I was unaware of the upcoming bout. Hasn't the rise of cage fighting rather put boxing in the shade? I probably see 20 of those on TV for one prizefight; which seem much rarer these days. The heavyweight bout between Klitschko and a punching bag from America a couple of weeks ago wasn't bad, however. All the action at that weight level seems to be in Eastern Europe. Not even Teddy Atlas can explain it.

Temporarily, sort of, yes. But this insightful analyst makes a compelling case for not counting boxing out yet.

Haye v. Klitschko might be pretty interesting, if that ever happens. I was completely, 100 percent wrong about Haye. v. Valuev. (We've heard nothing from Valuev since.)

Thank you for the respite! Have to hold your nose on this one. Pacquiao in 5.

Hardening the hand wraps (cheating) is just another of myriad good reasons pro boxing is losing its audience to cage fighting; MMA gloves are already about as soft as a pair of brass knuckles. Pacquiao's a great talent. I've always liked Freddie Roach. But if I want to watch pro boxing, I throw in my VHS of Leonard/Hearns in '82. As for Harry Reid, well, I don't think there's a lightweight class "light" enough to take him.

Manny Pacquaio isn't a U.S. citizen. Is it even legal for him to campaign for Harry Reid?

Why wouldn't it be? I'm pretty sure it's perfectly legal; I'm just wondering if it's grounds for hoping he gets his clock cleaned--in a legal way, of course.

Well, the law prohibits him from contributing funds to Reid. Contributions are established in law as a form of political speech. Lending his celebrity is akin to contributing funds.
