President Obama made two stops in my town tonight to fundraise for Barbara Boxer's reelection campaign. Here's an excerpt of the President's remarks, as shown on San Francisco's local KTVU Ten O'Clock News:

Here you got folks driving a car in a ditch, and then we're out there in the mud pulling the car out of the ditch.  And they're sittin' there, comfortable, drinkin' on a slurpee or somethin', sayin', "Uh...you're not pulling the car out of the ditch fast enough!"  Then we finally get the car out of the ditch, and they want the keys back! I say, "You can't have the keys! You don't know how to drive!"

Stay classy, Mr. President.

Interesting things come out of his mouth when he's not scripted. I have absolutely no idea why people think he's so brilliant. He just has a canned inflection and pompous demeanor while speaking words someone else wrote and he regurgitates. But, sometimes, he's even exposed when he sticks to the teleprompter. It clearly didn't occur to anyone on his staff that he wouldn't know how to pronounce "corpsman".

He's used this analogy several times before, if I recall correctly. Odd that he blames the Republicans when he's done far more to drive us into the ditch of fiscal irresponsibility or whatever the metaphor is.

I had lunch across the street yesterday, and saw all the preparations for Obama's arrival It's hard to picture Obama et al pulling the car out of the ditch while others -- I suppose he means the rich -- sit in the back seat, when the fundraiser is occurring at the Fairmont Hotel at the top of Nob Hill, probably the most expensive real estate in all of San Francisco, with dozens of San Francisco police officers spending their time guarding the event.

Isn't that the same place where during the campaign he described our miserable wretched lives, empty bitter lives that caused us benighted flyover-types to cling to our gods and guns? Of course, I admit that I am not well-to-do as are the Nob Hill residents.

I guess I need to go back to my place and cling some more.

Oh Duane, your bitterness is showing.

During the previous century I lived outside Ottawa, Canada for a couple years, in a log house with no garage and a gravel driveway. One winter the car tires all froze solid to the ground in an ice storm, and my wife had to call a tow truck to come break the car loose. On its way up to the house, the tow truck slid off the raised driveway into an adjacent depression and became stuck itself. The driver had to call over to Montreal for an even bigger tow truck to come pull the first truck out.

Mr. President, the people of the United States (aka the "folks") are not asking for the keys to the car. They are not even asking for the keys to "your" tow truck, which you and your party have driven into the ditch and buried in the mud up to its fenders. They're just hoping to hire an even bigger tow truck come November, to drag the whole besmirched mess back onto the road if they still can.

But hey, thanks for trying to help. We'll take it from here, if you don't mind.

Maybe Im assuming to much but its hard to imagine President Obama toiling in a ditch out of compassion for "folks" who are clearly well beneath him. Could it be the often upturned chin or the frequent and scolding wave of the index finger?

Several American Presidents were not far removed from lives involving muddy boots, Presidents Jackson and Lincoln come to mind. President Reagan spoke of working as a carpenters helper in his youth. All would accomplish great things in their personal and political lives.

President Obama has been granted an opportunity to pull a metaphorical car from a metaphorical ditch and may soon be left with a lot of political mud on his face.

One of the last stops, that our beloved President made that night, was to party at the Getty mansion in Pacific Heights. If I remember correctly, the Getty fortune was made in the oil business. That was good oil.
