Re: Oscar Night Live Chat: Sunday at 4:45PT/7:45 ET
This event counts as a "definitely miss" for me, not a "don't miss." I don't watch that many movies, and the awards get very tiresome. A bunch of Hollywood big egos congratulating each other and themselves over films I often haven't seen. I can't relate.
In college it seemed like a "don't miss" event for many, but it was that way mainly for those whose lives and thoughts revolved around the "culture" of mass media, something I've found to be a very odd phenomenon. Essentially we get our culture and ways of thinking dictated to us by a small elite (actors, singers, etc.) who in turn are often very out of touch with us and with the real world. Mass media may be part of our culture, but it is a very twisted, artificial and often unhealthy part of it. Moreover, it takes up all your energies to stay on top; today's hot item is tomorrow's old news.
If you enjoy it, I don't mean all this to be a knock against you. My main point is to point out the ultimate vapidity, uselessness and even negative influence of it all.

Perhaps you are right, Chris. But I think this might be a fun night, where it's okay to joke around, be light. The SOTU live chat really called for some thoughtful, more sober remarks, which we got, of course. But there are also some very, very funny people on Ricochet. An opportunity to see that side of folks might be fun.
Like you, I haven't seen any movies this year. But maybe some Ricos will recommend a few I should get on Netflix. While the Hollywood culture may be vapid, I think some of the movies produced there can be good. Brilliant, even.
Think of it as going to an Oscar party at a friend's house. The show's on in the background, but it's a chance to witness some levity, hear some fun comments, engage in some silliness. Can't we all use an opportunity to lighten up in a world where so much is dark?

I don't have television. Are the Oscars available online?
Re: Oscar Night Live Chat: Sunday at 4:45PT/7:45 ET
Not officially, but Google is your friend if you are looking for "unofficial" places to watch the broadcast.
Re: Oscar Night Live Chat: Sunday at 4:45PT/7:45 ET
I would LOVE to participate in this, but it starts at 2:45 am my time, so chances are I'll be unconscious. If I'm awake, I will check in to pass judgment on who won, who lost, and what they're wearing.

Oh comon, Judith! You gotta watch! I have a feeling, with all the "democracy" that the Chosen One has inspired over in the Middle East, Israel is about to reprise it's prominence as the go-to villain of the new Hollywood Left. Don't you want to know who this generation's Vanessa Redgrave is going to be? /sarcasm off
