One Simple Question From the Left
Why have you homophobic, Islamophobic climate change deniers who would send our fighting forces to die to protect oil interests...oppose equal rights for women and people of color...callously ignore the health care needs of our most vulnerable citizens...condemn our children to live on a planet ravaged by the effects of pollution... force young, inner-city women to choose between having more unwanted babies or obtaining life-threatening, back-alley abortions...spread malicious lies about people and policies you oppose...push for huge tax breaks for the wealthy at the expense of the middle-class...support laws that would punish the children of undocumented workers who have come here to make better lives for their families only to be exploited by big business...oppose any attempts by workers to organize themselves in order to stand up to greedy corporations...continually criticize public-sector workers who selflessly toil on behalf of all Americans...promote gender and racial stereotypes...advocate huge budget expenditures for weapons while ignoring the needs of average citizens...and conspire to steal elections through manipulation and intimidation...become the party of fear and hate?

Well, gee, when you put it that way...

Re: One Simple Question From the Left
Yeah, I'm familiar with the narrative. And everyone of those accusations can be reduced to a clever bumper sticker that can be affixed ten or twelve at a time to the back of a Volvo. The problem for conservatives is that the Constitution and The Federalist Papers can't be reduced into something sufficiently pithy to fit on the bumper of a Ford 150.
Re: One Simple Question From the Left
Why? Because we're religious (cue creepy organ music), and that's the kind of stuff you learn about in the pews.

Re: One Simple Question From the Left
Because if we didn't hate all those things we'd be taking it out on the whales. I once saw a bumper sticker that said we had to save the whales. So, by directing all my anger and all my hate at these other things, I have thought globally and acted locally. (Which I was reading on a bumper sticker when I rear-ended the liberal [expletive] who stopped short on me. He was going to argue with me but my passengers, Smith and Wesson, convinced him to move on....)
Ed.'s Note: Obscenities and vulgarities, even using various symbols for letters, or shorthand (e.g., text messaging abbreviations). Ricochet style is to use [expletive].

Re: One Simple Question From the Left
They call me these things, therefore it must be so. After all, I am but a victim of a racist, homophobic, misogynistic, cruelly Darwinist civilization. It certainly is not my fault.

Could you please repeat the question?

Re: One Simple Question From the Left
Well, I'll be darned, someone is actually watching that MSNBC thingamajig ?
I thought it was a sports channel,no really. I clicked on it once and there was a sportscaster talking and the next time, some woman commentator on golf ? curling....whatever. My friend, Joe tells me that there's a fella on there looks like a wet Jack Nicklaus . So we heard they were making up stuff like crazy, from the tone of your article, it's true. But it's not very nice to call folks things, sorta mean.

Re: One Simple Question From the Left
The competing dog whistles in your post are interesting. On our side, you've named many of the things which rile up us righties. On the other side, you've named all the topics that the left uses to rile up the interlocking parts of its base. Over the course of several decades, we've developed no effective counter. In fact we continue to make it even worse for us; for example, immigration. Twenty years from now, the citizen children of today's illegals will be Democrats.

Re: One Simple Question From the Left
I think it's the result of watching too much television. Game shows in particular have rotted my brain and corrupted my morals. If I had only spent more time weaving, reading poetry and listening to NPR, I might not be so callow and corrupt.

But it's a cute sort of callow, Trace.
Nice sandals, by the way.

Re: One Simple Question From the Left
Last year I confronted my son's doom-mongering science teacher (who had scared the heck out of my son with "rising sea-level" nonsense) with this question via email:
"The IPCC anticipates sea levels to rise 12-18" in the next 100 yrs. This, as you say, is the "scientific consensus," and even this prediction is trending downward. Given that this increase is approximately the same rise that we experienced in the last 150 years, during which time mankind improved its condition in every mearurable way, why, precisely, does this projected sea-level rise pose a grave threat to my son's future?"
His response was so manifestly lame, even to a 13 yr old ("I'm just saying we can't go on treating the planet as if....etc."), that my son has felt better about his future ever since.

Re: One Simple Question From the Left
Those of you who live in the states can address this better than I can. It does seem to me however that the liberal line you "highlight" has become so over the top, that people no longer listen, or if they do, ignore it. My perception is that this over the top, over heated diatribe has lost its ability to be effective and that people are moving beyond it. If I am right and the credibility of the left's "arguments" has been seriously damaged, perhaps permanently, we may well see a fundamental shift in discourse over coming years.
Heres hoping.

God doesn't command me to comfort Satan, or to support Satan's favorite forms of government--fascism, socialism, and communism. God commands me to comfort the victims of Satan, and the victims of fascism, socialism, and communism.

Re: One Simple Question From the Left
Steve, I think many conservatives are still intimidated by such speech. Certainly, many of us still have the bad habit of defending ourselves against such attacks, instead of dismissing them like the empty distractions they are or challenging the attackers by pointing out the cowardice of their claims.
The worst aspect might be that such ad hominem effectively shuts down conversations between the Left and the Right. Many, though not all, liberals no longer feel a need to engage with our ideas. That allows extreme views, like Obama's vision for a new America, to become more popular.
The good news is that there's a growing number of conservatives with large audiences who denounce such attacks (if only our politicians would join in). People need leadership. While we might not have our next Reagan yet, regular folks are becoming less intimidated as they can stand up for themselves and not stand out so much for doing so.

Well, we were the party of rainbows, unicorns, and cute little puppies. But it turns out none of those three are reliable voting blocs.

Re: One Simple Question From the Left
As a conservative I choose to see all people in an equal light based on the content of their character and not any other defining characteristic. I also generally reject government solutions to problems that may or may not exist. I believe in a clean planet that still allows people to work in our great country. I believe that poor inner-city girls should choose not to have premarital sex based on the good examples of both their parents and if they do become pregnant I would pray that they choose life over death for their baby. I believe excessive taxation for anyone is the root cause of tyranny. I believe in equal justice under the law and not selective application based on political benefit. I believe the primary duty of government is to defend our way of life. I can take of my self from there.

Puppies vote. In Chicago.
Re: One Simple Question From the Left
Notice, though, how those words are starting to seem...old, ineffective, toothless. They're like the Boy Who Cried Racist. At a certain point, the words just fail to leave a mark.
