One Candidate Sets an Example
Ricochet member Scott Reusser, commenting on my post about this November and the Battle of Saratoga:
It'll take more than big gains in Nov. to dispel that George Will conundrum [namely, that voters tend to oppose federal spending...except when it benefits them]. It will take those newly minted lawmakers' actively dismantling your program and my program while at the same time retainingour support.
One candidate who might just meet Scott's standard: Chris Gibson.
After an Army career that included three tours in Iraq, Chris retired to run for Congress in New York's 20th congressional district. Chris believes we're all going to have to get used to receiving less from the government, and he has decided to lead by example. If elected to Congress, he has promised, he'll forgo his Army pension, sacrificing many tens of thousands of dollars a year. (Chris and his wife still have three children to get through college. It really will be a sacrifice.)
Pleased, Scott?

Well, geez, I didn't mean to deny Iraqi vets their pensions! I'll give up my Social Security; the vets can keep their pensions. But, yes, I am most definitely pleased with Chris Gibson. Hopefully, the voters in NY 20 are, too.

Believe we'd all make the trade of giving up $65,000 [the amount I recall Gibson values his benefits] for the $170,000 or so pay of a Congressman. Yes, I realize there will be added expenses for Gibson, but believe he'll make out on the plus side.
That said if Gibson can increase the chances for most hardworking Americans to may a deal equally as economically advantageous then God speed sir!

Interesting how this contrasts with those political "leaders" who want to increase taxes but remain paying at today's lower rate, not "leading" by example, until legislation gets signed into law.
I find it a sad commentary of the times when those demanding higher taxes are not even asked why they are not paying the higher rates they want to impose on the rest of us.
